Hi
Starting to repair a 20 year old fibreglass 2 piece 12 foot DAM rod, the paint has been scratched and chipped off over the years, what do I need to do to repair/repaint this rod. It has sentimental value to my mate so I told him I would fix it up as best as possible, I have removed the guides and will replace them, can I clean up the rod and paint over it, if so what paint is best for the job. Thanks in advance. Cheers Chris. Re: Paint repair

Hi Chris,
Have had several older rods repainted. What I did was put them in a lathe and sand them down to get rid of irregularities being careful not to get into the glass. Be careful of your ferrule areas. Then sent them to the local panelbeater for a paint job, clears or colour. They use 2 pack paint which contains flex additives which will help it hold up better. You can do it yourself but remember that 2 pack is toxic and you will need a respirator with the proper filters. Panel shops have all the set up and I find it easier to get them to do it, you just got to find one that will do it for you. If you go with clears get 2 coats. If colour get a coat of clears over it. Remember it takes a few days for the stuff to harden up.The ones I've had done look really good but only time will tell if it will hold up long term. ESFNEM Col Edited 1 time(s). just a suggestion! I would not "sand a blank" I find it best to scrape the old paint with a sharp blade. Re: Paint repair

I have used a cirtius stripper with great success on a few blanks rebuilds. Put it on let it sit for a few and wipe it off with a paper towel or maybe a little scuf pad in stuborn area. Like all things do a "test" under a handle area to make sure you will not hany any issues.

Scrap it . No sanding. A body shop paint job is your best bet. If you want to do it. Krylon or auto bumper paints will work well. Check for the type of clear finish and how to do it in this forum.
I think you will be surprised how well you can do. It's not rocket science its a fishing rod. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
