Hey everyone. Just got some rod building gear and figured i would rebuild an old rod before i go full bore with a new blank etc. Ive stripped all the old guides off and ready for the next steps. Figured I would document the process and obviously use all of you for some help along the way and maybe at the end it can help another newbie like me. Now that the guides are off I'm going to scrape o

How would I go about using permagloss for rod finishing? The blanks are already painted and some old rods could use some refinishing. Do I clean them and apply directly, or is pre sanding with fine grit sandpaper required? Does the rod needs to turning for application and/or drying? How many rods will a 1 ounce bottle coat?

I just finished making a 'new' rod out of a a St. Croix Mojo Bass factory rod that was broken off about an inch above the handle. The part I could salvage was 5'10" long; the power is medium heavy. My Steps: a.) Decided on a Spinning Rod over a Casting Rod (and to use only components I had on hand). b.) Removed factory guides and extra epoxy with a razor blade. Carefully. c.) Scraped

I had an old spinning rod . It was a Fenwick graphite 6'_6" blank. I removed the reel seat ,grips, guides and hook holder. Now I want to restore the blank. What paint do I use spray paint or brush? How do I prep the blank?

Hello. Long time stalker, but my first post! I really want to figure out the squeegee method of painting rod blanks that I've seen in factory tour videos. I'm frustrated with the mess, paint waste, and overall hassle of spray painting (plus I suck at it). I can get the single stage high quality automotive paints I need, but the materials I've tried for the rubber membrane aren't working well.

I'm replacing all the wraps on a G Loomis spinning rod (SAR1084S) that has been heavily used by a local guide. All the wraps are cracked. The question is, how can I clean up this blank without sanding and recoating it? I've wiped it with denatured alcohol 3 times and acetone twice. It's getting better but it is still funky. Just keep wiping it down, or does anyone have a secret sauce to spee

Friends: I'm about to strip down a number of rods to freshen the guides and looks. The issue is preparation of the blank prior to rewrapping new guides. In the past I have had mixed success in recoating the blank. The finished results have been lumpy or if smooth have scratched or chipped away quickly with only slight knocks and scrapes. The rods in question are Calstar Graphiters

Hello, I am stripping an old graphite build and putting on new guides. I'm using single foots so I need to get rid of the finish at least around the guides and I think it would be best to replace it altogether. I see conflicting advice and a video that looks like a very bad idea (essentially scraping it off on a fast turning lathe). From what I can find sanding even a little bit of the graphite o

I was given quite a few old Lamiglas and Fenwick blanks from a friend. One is a UL 81 4E that the finish looks white and flaking off a bit. After doing some research on old posts, it looks like I need to either wet sand it with 600 grit sandpaper or a fine Scotch-Brite pad. Afterward, I will use Permagloss with a cosmetic sponge. Am I going in the right direction with this? Thanks in advance for

First time rod builder, first post in forum. I’m building a fly rod for my father for Christmas. I have the lower half of blank complete except final coat of finish and I’m wondering if it’s possible to coat entire rod with finish (Pro kote) ?? It’s a MHX blank smooth graphite if I remember correctly. I’m not really liking the look of guide wraps finished in gloss on the matte blank. Thank

I am redoing a rod that I built a couple of years ago. I stripped the guides, and in the process, removed some of the original finish from the blank. It is a partial removal at the location of the original guides. The replacement guides will not be in the same location. Is there a good way to restore the finish at the original location of the guides on the blank?

I have stripped an old rod of my buddy’s and am putting a new guide set on it. Most of the old guides were double foot and the guides I am replacing them with are single foot so the “footprint” where I scraped off the epoxy and thread is much bigger than what I’ll be replacing it with. My question is how do I cover up the scuff marks on the blank from the scraping and sandpapering off of the old

I am rebuilding a G.Loomis surf rod and need to repaint the blank with flat black paint to cover up original paint scratches. I want to cover this paint with U-40 perma gloss. I tried Krylon on an old blank, let dry 24 hrs, then applied U-40, but the paint then dissolved and rubbed off. Any ideas on which paint to use?

Hey everyone! I made a few posts when I started this adventure, built my own rod wrapping stuff, bought threads, epoxies, have been lurking, reading, and practicing since. I have already stripped and rebuilt 5 rods, for friends, Ugly Sticks so nothing fancy, and have gotten pretty good at wrapping thread, and epoxy finish. I have gotten Nearly perfect, glassy finishes on every rod. I did have

I am finishing a blank with Perma Gloss and I am getting sediment in the finish. I took the original finish down with sanding & used Scotch Brite on the blank then cleaned thoroughly with denatured alcohol. What is happening here???

Hi to all you happy wrappers, thanks for reading and hopefully assisting to resolve my Perma Gloss issues. Without using PG before, I read the application directions and purchased a couple good quality, 3/8in artist brushes. The first coat applied to the rotating butt section resulted in a slightly streaky, lumpy finish, obviously from my “thin” coat being thicker than what PM considers thin. Al

To all; A glorious good day. At the risk of opening an unending debate, or not receiving any replies at all due to all you long-time wrappers going through the same question once again, I will be appreciative of your insight and opinions concerning rod blank refinishing. I can hear you now, “Not this again!”, and I can’t really blame you. But I am new to wrapping and have some of my own ideas/th

A glorious, good day to all you happy wrappers and a previous thank you to those replying to offer assistance. I have become very fond and respectful of the old FG rods from the 50’s and 60’s, restoring those with names / markings such as Conolon, Garcia, South Bend to their original condition. Others found without names, which were probably custom or home wrapped, I have removed the guides, fer

Hey guys so I am going to be building my a new texas rig rod soon. I am deciding between a SCV blank or a Point Blank blank. I am pretty much going to choose based on the warranty. Do they both have limited lifetime warranties, or how long are the warranties the two companies offer? thanks!

I have a customer that wants me to paint a blank with metallic paint. I have never painted a blank and don't even know if this should be done. Does it crack? What type paint? Does it change the action of the rod? Any feedback will be great. Thanks

I built a spinning rod on a Lamiglas GLB 84 1M, what hey call a "Trout Rod" on the Outer Banks, I was going to use it for casting lures from Jetties in DE for Striped Ball - it has a fast action well suited for throwing metal and fishing live eels in the Inlet I fish - Indian River Inlet, where a lot of the action ifight up against the rocks, and it casts lures well too. Unfortunately

I have an old Carrot Stick blank that I removed the Orange paint from. The result is a flat matte grey blank. It is smooth as I used 6000 wet dry paper (wet) to finish. How and what can I use to get a gloss shine back on this blank?

I'm going to clean and refinish an old graphite blank with satin polyurethane from a spray can as an experiment; quick, dirty, and cheap. Has anyone tried this, and if so, any suggestions?
