What is the difference between high build and low build? I am deciding between flex coat or U40 duragloss LS Supreme for thread finishing. Which is most preferred by builders? Since I don't have a drying motor, which epoxy would set the fastest? I think I will apply the thread finish and leave the rod turning on the finishing motor until it set well enough that I can take the rod off an

Have caught the BFS bug. Has anyone has built an ultralight/spiral wrap baitcasting rod for trout or panfish? I have a couple old Abu Garcia UL spinning rods I may scrape and attempt. Seems it would create better line flow through the guides. Use of fiberglass blanks would IMO provide a more appropriate soft action. Any comments or solid advice always welcome. Tuna

OK, it is a given that we all build custom fishing rods. With the exception of those rods that we build for a particular customer within a specific timeframe, how do you store your other masterpieces which might take “awhile” before they are delivered? For that matter, how do you store your own personal rods? Time length type of storage is the main question. While a rod propped against the wall

I am a rank novice who has built two spinning rods with extensive tutoring from Norm Miller ( the man is an amazingly tolerant saint ) . I would like to start gathering / reading as much information on fly rod builds as I can so that I might be able to cobble one together over the Winter . In Mr. Kirkman's book , he states fly rod builds are similar to spinning builds so hopefully my limited expe

I am looking to do a cord wrap butt grip on a 12'6" surf rod. I have done cord wraps over drywall tape/epoxy base before but now I am wondering if I can do it over a urethane foam core. The thickness of the foam core layer would be appr. 3mm. The cord is Atwood Rope 1/16" diameter micro cord. I apply two or three coats of Perma Gloss over the cord wrap. Any thoughts on whether t

A top-shelf eight-weight fly rod which weighs 2.75 ounces is retailing for $1050.00 - that's $382 an ounce! The wholesale value of the materials in this rod is unlikely to exceed $150. Perhaps custom rod builders should re-examine their product pricing?

A friend of mine is a local guide and just broke his favorite flounder rod. I'm looking to find a blank that's close enough that I can replicate it. The old rod was a Daiwa DXB801MHRB. it's an 8' MH 1/4-1oz 12-17lb line rating. It has a slower action and he fishes 1/2 to 1 oz bucktails with it. Thank you for any assistance you all can give me.

Several days ago I posted an inquiry concerning using metallic embroidery thread for trim thread. I was cautioned to test it before using it on the rod I am currently working on, I always planned on doing that. I did several practice wraps on an old graphite spinning rod and used the embroidery thread, coated it twice with Thread Master Lite and dried it on my rotating dryer for four hours, it l

I acquired an older Calstar 6465 XH-B that I thought would make a great rail rod. It's so stiff that finding the spine the usual way by having the butt on the floor and applying pressure against the blank while supporting the tip just wasn't getting it, so I used the straightest axis to find it. That worked well. Everything was going smoothly until I glued up the aluminum reel seat. It required v

Is there any credible source which compares the performance in casting distance and/or accuracy of various rod blanks-rod builds? Or must we rely upon advertising, hearsay, and feelings rather than measurable facts?

I post this one for your amusement. While I love Roland Martin and watch many of his Florida bass fishing videos on youtube, his latest video on rod repairs left me shaking my head when he went to putting epoxy on his favorite rod claiming "how to make it better than it was" (made when new). I could not believe what he was doing. In this video Roland shows everyone how he repairs

I did some searching but came up “blank” (pun intended) I have some blanks I need spray paint and wanted to knock number out at once so got to thinking about what I could use to hold the blank upright - and then it also crossed over to thinking about how to store blanks vertically vs leaning against the wall or having to have a long talk space for them on a rack Was in the sporting good st

Or maybe I should say - how wide/long...... trying to determine where I can stake claim in the house as I get into the hobby, and wanted to get some advice for what is considered the "minimum" width to be working with to reasonably, and ideally efficiently, wrap/finish rods. Assume for sake of argument, that I'd be doing primarily 7-8' rods...... I guess the minimum then i

I am going out today and looking at purchasing inventory from a reputable rod builder, who is selling out due to health issues. He has not been building rods since 14. How do I go about offering a fair price ? I can post detailed inventory here once I look at all of it, however I have seen some pictures of Calstar, Fugi, Gudebrod, Aftco and Winthrop tips, etc. I am not a novice nor an expert I ha

I'm adding to my quiver of long fly rods for fishing from my pontoon and float tube. Several years ago I built a 10' 5 wt. Dan Craft Black Canyon. The rod turned out beautiful but the action is too fast for me. Does anyone have experience with the 10' Dan Craft GXT blanks? Alternatiavely, a long blank from CTS (9'6" or longer)? I generally fish larger lakes and reservoirs (Henry's Lake

I'm curious as to which orientation is correct for storing fly rods horizontally . Store with the eyes up or down ? With the spine or against . I know this is a silly question but when looing at my rods the end sections bend down and I wouldn't want them to take a set . I had one do that but it was leaning against a wall in the good old Arizona @#$%& heat .

I was expecting an item though a shipper today to use tomorrow. I was tracking its progress from its source and was transferred from one carrier to another in St. Louis. It appeared that it was on its way and indicted that it was in the area receipt point yesterday. It should have gone out for local delivery yesterday, but on the tracking screen, a red screen popped up and ther
