I’ve been practicing tying my KB’s and KT’s on some practice blanks and the KT’s are really loose after tying. I’m considering using all KB’s to the tip because it has a bigger footprint and a lot easier to work with. I’m using size 6. Are there any concerns or issues that I should be aware of. Thanks and appreciate any input you may have. Brent Murray

I heard recently that you are not supposed to grind the guide feet on Fujis, as this will mess up the anti corrosion coating on them. This supposedly includes BC grey amd CC silver coatings. Do anyone knows if this is true? And is grinding them necessary?

So I've seen a lot on guide prep about shaping and fililng down the leading edge of the guides. My question is can you also file down/shape the sides of the guide to reduce the gap when rapped. I have a guide that when rapped has a signifigant space under the thread that I don't think you could get filled with epoxy and stay hollow. I'm thinking of just reducing the guides edges to get a smoother

Sorry if this sounds like a trivial question, but I always find contouring the guide feet in general to be a pain in the neck. On most small guides, I have always used sand paper for the most part...sand paper in one hand and guide in the other. This was usually for fly rod guides. It was still a pain in the neck, but at least the guides had some length to them so you could have some meat to h

I have noticed that all of the eyes I am using are fabricated so the tips of the feet both touch the blank but the rest of the length of the foot is slightly above the blank. Is this ok? If so, why?

I have been watching videos on wrapping and have a question. I sometime hear negative comments about pre-gluing guides to the blank prior to wrapping; however, I have sen it done in several instructional videos. I am having problems keeping the guides on while wrapping small double footed casting guides. They are so small that if I do tape it well I am unable to leave any room to start the wra

Well I am once again thinking too much. I ordered a blank got the wrong one. Now I am waiting which gives me too much time to think over my build. Had it somewhat figured out I thought. Anyways the blank is a Phenix FX601-1-B fast action six foot 1-6 lb. My whole goal is to build as light as possible. My reel will be a pflueger president xt 20x with 4 pound mono or 6 pound braid. Will be a s

I did a quick search on the forums to see if there any posts regarding American Tackle's TiForged Guides, and saw that there were pretty minimal posts online. I'm only familiar with Fuji guides, and wanted an opinion on how they compare when using them for running guides. I like Fuji's RV-6 stripper guide and their Arowana tiptop, so I'll likely use those, but could I use American Tackle's size

I just ran across this morning. A $100 tool to prep guides and do other small work around the shop: Sorry about the misinformation. Jay is correct. $80 for the machine and $20 for the belts. Total $100 It could be a winner.

I wanted to post a question to the brain trust, I have had a couple of rods break recently and someone told me I may be using to much tension on the thread while wrapping the guides. One was a northfork and the other a MHX. One broke really close to the 2nd guide from the tip of the rod. Would putting to much tension on the thread cause this to weaken the blank and break. Thanks again for all

Hello all! This is my first rod build and I'm sure I'm over thinking this whole guide thing. It's for my father's birthday which is quickly approaching. I would love some guidance so I can start building! The rod is a 7' medium/fast with a 3000 spinning reel. It will most likely be used with mono as that what he tends to use. I'm struggling to lock down what guides to use and where to pu

Hi, just wondering what the possibilities are on a using a transparent wrap on a saltwater rod rated 30 to 50 lbs. I'm not sure the strength of silk to nylon. If I recall correctly, the tensile strength of silk is very high. I'd like to (maybe) use it on a butt guide that will have a cross wrap as an underwrap, so the only thing hidden on the butt wrap will be the guide feet on the bottom of t

I am currently wrapping the guides on a rod, and the bottom guide (which is a #20) is giving me fits. The guides are American Tackle Titans, titanium frame, which I haven't used before. The frame seems much more massive in gauge compared to other brands I've used. I'm using PacBay NCP thread size A. I can't seem to be able to not get a puckered appearance where the thread comes off the guide fee

When I first started thinking about building rods for myself, I knew I'd have things to learn along the way. Well .... I learned one of them about 10 minutes ago. It's something that if I would have really thought about before I did it, I would have known it wasn't a good thing to do. In my own defense, other than metallic trim bands, I had only ever wrapped with black thread, so I had no reason

As I imagine most of you do, I file or grind my guide feet prior to wrapping to get the smooth transition from the blank up on to the guide foot. On a trip last year we got caught in some ugly weather and several of the rods in our "arsenal" were damaged. My son informed me that I need to find a different way to do my guides, as a lot of them showed signs of rust. I showed him some Cals

Nope, not back to the old grind. I'm building a rod using yellow thread wraps on a dark-green blank. I'll spray paint the blank white where the yellow wraps will fall to allow the yellow to "pop" - I have done this before with coated guide feet. This time I'm using REC NiTi snake-foot guides and I would like the white undercoating to cover the NiTi guide feet so the result does not rese

Hey fellas, do you still prep the guide feet before wrapping? Is there one manufacturer that has a better prepped foot and finish for wrapping? Speaking solely for spinning and casting rods up to 20lb. Thanks! Will

Has anybody come up with a surefire and quick way to prep guide feet. I hate this job! Been using a file and can do it but find it time consuming and tear up my fingernails. There has got to be a better way.

I recently bought a $39 Central Machinery unit from Harbor Freight specifically for grinding guide feet. I wasn't sure what to expect but it turned out to be a great tool for the job. It's sturdy and reasonably accurate. It came with an 80 grit belt which is quite aggressive for this application. I ordered some finer belts from another source which I think will improve the process. Overall

I recently read a post from someone wanting to get narrow tape for positioning guides for wrapping. I just went to Wesco auto supply and bought 1/8th " and 1/4" auto masking tape. This is great stuff, similar to the blue painters tape for walls. It is a light green color and does not leave a residue behind like regular masking tape does. The 1/8" is perfect for smaller guides e

I am trying to find threads on prepping rod guides, I search several different ways. Any help with a search or the actual prepping would be appreciated. I am using stainless guides and understand you have to grind and finish so windings will have a smooth transition. What I don't know is after the grinding, should the guides be coated withing something or are they ready to go. I have read so

I know this is nothing special but I was so excited I had to post some pics! I started last night with the double foot micro guide and had a few hideous wraps. My biggest problem was cutting the tag end at the end of a wrap. This morning I finally realized my error...I was pulling the tag end through and only far enough to cut instead of pulling the tag end all the way through and then cutting.

I know everyone has their favorite method for prepping guide feet but I use a 3 1/2" bench grinder with a grinding wheel and a fiber/polishing wheel. It's performed well at the end of my bench for years and saves me time in grinding guide feet. It's on sale at harbor freight for $35 through the weekend. I don't normally buy stuff there but this particular tool has been great for me. Te

I am building a spinning rod and put a metalic thread siz A under wrap down for all the guides as they are double footed. And The metalic thread was a pian in the A%S! the foil kept flaking and stretching on me. Is this normal or am I not suppose to use metalic as an under wrap or what?

I know we prep the guide feet prior to putting guides on a blank and I'm in the middle of a build right now. I was prepping a guide when I thought. I have never had a guide or blank failure from not prepping and I do repairs and I have never had a rod come in with any damage due to a guide foot. I do mine for the purpose of just checking to see if a burr is there and to ease the transition of thr

I don't want the thread to show on the rod. I want the guides to look like thy are just sitting on the rod with no thread just the clear finish. Any ideas? I was thinking white silk and no CP, is that the way to go or is there a better way.
