I have purchased some CFX foam core material for spinning rod split grips . These will be for light spinning rods . My objective with the foam grip is simple I want to see if I like it better than the cork I have been using . For the sake of simplicity I would like to paint rather than use a carbon fiber sleeve. My questions are directed towards those who have painted foam grips before. 1) Are t

I was a bit careless with my dremel and made a very small nick in the annodized aluminum reel seat for my current buiid. There's now a really small spot, only a couple millimeters, where it took off the black paint. It's purely cosmetic, but was wondering if anyone had any ideas how to I can touch this up to hide the bright aluminum spot I have now on my black reel seat. I have looked online a bi

I'm in bed recovering from cancer treatment and tend to spend a lot of time on YouTube. I recently came across videos by Japanese custom rod builders and am fascinated about how they do many things differently than I am accustomed to.
Handles seem to be built on a graphite tube and then the tube is slid over the rod butt and epoxied.
Multiple coats of thread epoxy and what I think is two part

Okay so I'm on to what I believe is the final piece of the puzzle. I have my Rod Blanks selected.
Going with the for my jerk bait rod and for my skipping rod
I know this doesn't make a difference, but for the jerk bait rod I'm going with a Ohio State/Classic car style the entire rod being Red Metallic with silver metallic thread. For the flipping Rod I'm using my old high school colors of p

Until I joined this site I never really heard so much about weight reduction. Since joining and reading most of the topics, it seems that there is a huge belief that the less weight...the better. I can understand that a fisherman doesn't want to cast a 2lb. rod all day when he can cast one in ounces. However, I really can't understand cutting grams will make a better more desirable rod. I'm building a UL trout spinning rod for our pastor. I turned a reel seat insert from boxelder burl which I bought on @#$%&, since my previous supplier, Steve Kincaid, retired. This block was much softer, generated more dust and didn't seem to be fully impregnated as those i had previously used. Also, the medium CA finish I applied had thickened in storage and, obviously, went on thicker than

Hello everybody,
I'm looking for an old Fenwick spinning rod (mainly from 90s like Legacy, Golden Wing, HMG etc.. ) sporting a handle like in the attached picture.
Broken rods are also welcome, even better than the whole rod. Just need it to rebuild a Fenwick rod with "family" components....
Many thanks

Clear coat for custom paint reel seat?
I read that only automotive grade paint has surface hard enough for clear coat (for painting reel seat, reel, etc...). But when I look for it there are lots of automotive grade clear coat, for car body, wheel, engine, brake, etc......I read that people use this Dupli Color Perfect Match clear coat (designed for car body) but I cannot find it. I can find t

10. Productive day
I had a great day in the shop today. Until today all of my practice consisted of replacing and wrapping line guides. I have one rod that I stripped all the way to the blank. A 7' med/mod fast casting rod I have had since the early 80s. Another was a 6.5 ft. med H/fast Bass Pro Pro Qualifier I bought in the 90s. This was the best and most $$$ rod I had bought at the time. It was still in pre

11. Painting Cork
Building up a new rod and decided to go with the Fuji VSS reel seat and split grips and wondered to possibly put a twist and maybe it’s too big of twist but wondered if you guys have ever had any luck painting cork.
I read one man first expoxied the cork, then sanded, primed and painted then to cover and protect he epoxied over top of the paint and he said it worked well but I wanted to see i

I started painting the pistol grip pac bay foam cores this past weekend. I noticed quickly that the surface doesnt let the epoxy/paint mixture adhere to it too well. I scuffed it a bit to get the epoxy to stick to it. That seemed to work a little better, but not as good as I had hoped. I have the final clear coat of epoxy drying now. It worked overall, just a bit more care with it than i exp

I have a rod I am rewrapping with a Fuji graphite reel seat with gold hoods installed on rod. I want to change the color of the gold hoods to silver or something very similier. Can I mask and paint the hoods? Or mix a little epoxe with silver pigment and brush some of that on and hope it stays on place ? What would you do ? Any ideas or input is appreciated.
Thank you,
Tom

Got the itch to start painting my own reel seats the other day and wouldn't ya know I feel head over heels into doing it. These are all just testers I will be using for long term durability tests of the process and to get my work flow down but man I'm loving the results. I put some of these out on facebook already.
All these were painted with House of Kolor paints with several primer coats s

You would think with modern autobody paint that matagi would be able to paint the reel seat hoods. Anyone know the reason why they don't?

I have an opportunity to build a rod using the American Tackle Aero reel seat, however the customer would like it in white. Does anyone know who offers those reel seats in pure white. Otherwise I would consider painting one but have not done so on a reel seat and was worried about long term use and how it would hold up. Any suggestions or suppliers it greatly appreciated.

Hi All, many threads on painting blanks but I could not find one on Aluminum blanks. I have an old Mitchell Rod and Reel that I am redoing for my cousin. It is a sentimental piece or I prob would not bother with it lol. So, I have the Krylon (leather brown), I matched it and tried it on an old blank so that is good.
2 Main questions then:
1) Should I prime the blank since it's aluminum?

I have commercial rod with a black VSS seat on it (it is marked as a Fugi product). I liked the seat, so I ordered a deluxe VSS to build on, expecting it to match the black eva grip that is made for it and the other black components that I have. I was surprised by the gray and would like to know if black is somehow available?

I will be starting a rod rebuild . It has a Fuji graphite reel seat with gold metal hoods. I want to change the color of the of the hoods to a different color, maybe silver or blue. I was thinking of using tinted epoxe but the hoods are at an an angle and i would have no way to control the flow. If anyone has tried this before or has any ideas I would appreciate any input.
Thanks,
Tom

Hi everyone, it's me again
As the thread title says, I messed up my jerkbait rod. I won't go into the gorey details. Instead I'll just say that an experiment in extending a rod blank wouldn't have produced the rod I was hoping for. Being a bit disheartened by the would be results, and curious as to what the affects of trimming 6" off the butt of a blank would be .. the remaining piece of

22. Fore grip
Hello gents,
its been a little while since ive had time to stop in here no less build a rod. But im making time.
My question is, if I am building a 7' spinning rod is their a standard length for the fore grip, of is it a matter of preferences for the individual?
Thanks in advance.

Been asked to make a 5 foot 1 or 2 piece rod for a little girl. It will have a Zebco type reel and is going to be in pink. Thinking that fiberglass would be most forgiving but I can't seem to find any. And not sure how well paint would hold up on glass. Any suggestions, or if anyone has done this I would appreciate your input. I have done quite a few on the CRB blanks but they are 5'6"

I've had a couple questions about the Mad-Swirl technique, so I am just clarifying some of those questions.
The Mad-Swirl is a technique of painting with water and paint. This is accomplished by 2 methods, the Borax Method, and the Magic Marble Method.
(1) - The Borax Method requires more work. It requires a certain water temperature, certain borax mixture ratio, and water preparation. Th

I am going to paint some fuji reel seats. I think Krylon Fusion is going to be my best best from what I have read and tried. My only real concern is how durable it is on the threaded portion of the seat barrel. Is the paint going to wear and peel after a few uses of the locking nut? I thought about coating the entire job with permagloss or similar but wonder if the added thickness of paint and cl

Hello,
I'm curious about use of white vinegar to prepare surface on carbon blank before gluing handle, reel seat, etc.
I know vinegar is use before painting plastic, but on carbon blank ?
Vinegar will damage the blank ?
Vinegar make a good surface prep before gluing ?
Thank you.

I have an Aftco aluminum reel seat with gold hoods, and in the process of rewrapping this rod.
I would like to know if it is possible to paint and seal the reel seat hoods to match the new color scheme of the rod. Maybe mask them, spray them and put some kind of sealer on them for durability.?
Any input or suggestions are appreciated.
Thank you,
Tom
