I am teaching a class of beginner rod builders. They are Disabled Veterans and members of Project Healing Waters. So all their components are purchased by Project Healing Waters. My question is this. For a beginner rod builder what support would be the best? Yes, I know that's a loaded question and there probably is no best answer, but I only have experience with a few like the low-end Mudho

I've been on a Learn More about the KR Concept kick for a couple weeks now. My first time reading and learning through the material a few years ago, I realized the many advantages and flexibilities KR provides. And just like with CCS, I knew there was even more to learn with a deeper study. One idea that stood out from the rest was Rapid Choke. The KR Concept advocates for a Rapid Choke, o

Super confused. I’m measuring my reel spool diameter at 47 mm x 27 = 1,269mm. That converts to 49.9 inches. My rod I’m building on is 6’ in length so with those numbers I’m roughly left with 10” of rod for running guides (that’s a rough measurement. It may be an inch or two more or less.) Am I doing something wrong? I feel like that’s a small amount of space to put three running guides. Also,

I have built quite a few inshore rods using the Microwave guide system with micro guides. I really like the line management of this system. 7 ft 10-18 lb blanks. I would like to build the same blank with Fuji guides that would come as close as possible to the line management. Have any of you found the closest Fuji guide train for this? Recommendations please.

I have read the the Microwave Air guides are the best guides ever. I bit the bait and ordered a set for a 6'-6" rod. This is going on a bass rod. Has anybody try the Microwave Air Guides?

How many folks have built a spinning rod, or a bait casting rod with no intermediate guides. Rather, just put a stripper guide of an appropriate size on the rod blank and then, increase the spacing to the first runner, and then just run runners to the tip and the tip top. Is there really any absolute needs for any intermediate sized guides? I speculate that with the braided lines, tha

Are the first 3 guide locations set for the microwave guides. 19 1/2 inchs from the lip of the spool when it is fully extended. Then the next 2 are set per the measurements on the guide package.. Or are these a ball park ? I have done a static test with these guides at these measurements and only have to adjust my runners. They seem perfect. But I thought I would get a bit more distance out of

I have built a few rods with the AT microwave guides and like the ease of setting them up on the rod. Why don't more builders use these compared to the regular style?

Hi all, I got confused between two rod builds I am doing at the same time and wrapped one rod with its first reduction guide one inch too close the the stripper guide. How big of a deal is this? I did a really nice wrap on it and seriously don't want to cut it off unless i have to. It's an 8' med-hvy rod using the KR concept 25/12/5.5/5 etc. Was supposed to be 22" > 10.6" > 7.6

Been out of the game for about 10 years. Is the new guide concept still a good way to set up a spinning rod? I'm building a 2pc 10' spinner (SU1207F-2-MHX) for surf casting and using a van staal vr150 with 50lb braided line (12lb diameter in mono) with no connecting knots. I'm trying to build it as light as possible while being able to cast as far as possible. Also any suggestions on guides th

I'm new to fly rod building and could use some advice on striper guides. I am preparing to build a 9'9wt. rod using snake guides. I am not sure of what striper guides to use . Are these simply casting guides or is there a specific style for fly rods? Many thanks Tom Wood

Hey fellas, I have a client that asked me to wrap a spinning steelhead rod for him using the Microwave guides. I haven't used a Microwave ringset on a build before but have a pretty good idea after reading all the threads here. Which brings me to my question: Why are there 3 different "sized" 20/6 stripper guides? Microwave spinning, Microwave AIR, MW20. Sized I mean, each h

I build a lot of UL to Medium spinning rods, most will never see more than 8# mono as the most challenging line to cast, and lot's of light braid. Do many of you guys run a set up with a butt guide, single transition guide, and all runners from there? I still use size 6 runners, just easier to work with building and for my eyes fishing as well. I have been playing with some of the new tangle

Do you guys think coatings have any measurable effect on guide weight (such as a black or chrome version of same guide set)? I don't see any info about guide weight when looking to purchase, do you just kind of go by experience/visual and material input to guess? They come in so many sizes and shapes it's crazy - American Tackle Microwave and Airwave and all that look appealing - your thoug

Hello Community, I am attempting to make my first rods, one for my 9 year old nephew and also one for me. The rods will be used for Twitching/Spinning rod for salmon and steelhead for the rivers near Vancouver BC (Vedder river, Capilano river, Stave river, etc..). it will be paired with a Shimano Vanford 3000xg spinning reel. I would like a 2 piece rod for ease of transport and storage. I

Along the lines of my other post, asking about a light blank for my first rod, I need to purchase my first set of guides. Any recommendations? I plan to experiment with different sizes, to learn the fundamentals. This is more about learning than optimizing at this point. Probably for mono/fluoro, at this point. Do I need to determine if braid will be used, to prevent groves. Bein

Good Morning, Hope all is well... I am building a few rods on NFC IM 2pc fly blanks. I called and asked NFC about the types of guides to use and they were very kind to give me the types of guides they use on their x-ray blanks. They used Snake Brand guides...standard guides near the base and light wire up to the tip. I have been a fly fishing guide for a long time and I've learned that ever

What is your go to guide for a spinning setup for a bass rod build? I have been using lzr’s but have noticed the guides don’t always run perpendicular to the foot all the time. I like the price point but am not real happy with the quality of them, so I am on the hunt for a new brand of guides, that hopefully won’t break the bank. Thanks, Dave

Hi all, I am planning to build steelhead rod. I have few questions I need help with, any input will be appreciated. 1. I am leaning toward northfork ST 904 blank. There are 2 options- HM and IM. what will be the main difference between those besides blank weight and price? Is this one of those -"u get what you pay" or else? 2. How do I find spine on 2 piece blank? 3. I am think

The MicroWave Line Control System is the most awarded technology in fishing tackle history with a total of 6 worldwide Best of Show innovation awards. The reason; it is the most effective and efficient line control system ever created. The very purpose of line guides are to capture loose line coming off of a reel and control it during the cast efficiently allowing the rod and angler to perform at

The MW25 guide system is the most comprehensive set of MicroWave guides yet. Specifically designed to cast heavier braided, monofilament, and fluorocarbon fishing lines. Can be used with standard light rod applications but ideal for use on inshore, nearshore, or offshore rods as well as on longer rods or with larger reel sizes. Greetings. I am looking for help with choosing guides for a rebuild project.. The rod was built on a Calstar T 120 blank as a spinning rod. It is a 5 ½ ft. freshwater blank. The guy who built it mostly built saltwater rods, and that was how he put this rod together. It has all double foot guides (COF) and underwraps. I'm not criticizing (the guy's threadwork was amazing), but even with my very li

Is there any evidence that rods built with certain blanks and certain components will cast farther and/or with more accuracy than rods built with other blanks and components? Most serious anglers value performance over appearance, but advertisements for rod blanks and components do not reveal how their products perform. Why not? Maybe they all perform alike!

So for my first ever ICRBE it was amazing. I have met some amazing people and builders. It is interesting how many people know each other and it felt like a family reunion. Doors opened at 8 am and it was off to the races. It was amazing hearing the outpouring of support for American Tackle products and hearing how many of you build with our stuff. We were busy right up to the end of the day

Hi everyone. This is an amazing forum and a bit intimidating to a new builder. I hope you can forgive the new guy as my questions may seem rudimentary in nature. It's such a great opportunity to seek advice from experts before I buy all the wrong stuff. I will try to keep my questions related to guides and placement. I'm building an ultralight with a size 1000 reel, 6 lbs braid on the NFC FW 661

What guides and ring material do you like to use for mag bass blanks? I got a NFC mag bass HM blank that is going to be used for everything but the kitchen sink. Will Fuji alconite guides downplay the blanks potential too much? Their cost point is pretty low but SIC guides cost 3x as much and this will be a freshwater only rod. Thanks for the input!

Hello, My first post here. I tie flies and the pandemic has 'driven' or perhaps 'guided' me to rod building. I have build two rods (6wt fly and 6' light spinning) and looking to diver deeper in! So, thanks in advance. I am interested in short spinning rods which are my preference when jigging for Walleyes. I am looking at the Arctos ASJ691, which is a ML 5'9". Pac Bay doesn't provide
