Hey all, I was wondering if anyone has built an 808 NEO casting rod and if so, how many guides, their size and their placement that you used.. I am in the middle of 2 line static testing and it is driving me crazy. I have seemingly way to many guides and I still can't keep the line from dropping below the blank. Is that something I am going to have to live with or has someone successfully figu

Have caught the BFS bug. Has anyone has built an ultralight/spiral wrap baitcasting rod for trout or panfish? I have a couple old Abu Garcia UL spinning rods I may scrape and attempt. Seems it would create better line flow through the guides. Use of fiberglass blanks would IMO provide a more appropriate soft action. Any comments or solid advice always welcome. Tuna

I’m sure this has been discussed. I stopped at a custom rod builder in my neck of the woods to buy a tip top and hook keeper, which I always forget to order. I brought a couple of rods to critique. I’ve only made 5 or 6. He said I was doing alright, but my spine was off on my baitcasting rod. Thought I paid close attention to the right spot. He then explained how I should’ve put the first 2 g

Been out of the game for about 10 years. Is the new guide concept still a good way to set up a spinning rod? I'm building a 2pc 10' spinner (SU1207F-2-MHX) for surf casting and using a van staal vr150 with 50lb braided line (12lb diameter in mono) with no connecting knots. I'm trying to build it as light as possible while being able to cast as far as possible. Also any suggestions on guides th

I have an X-Ray MB-736 blank I would like to setup with a set of micro guides. Possibly looking at the Titan Artus micros, but also open to suggestions. What combination of sizing and spacing is everyone using for micros?

I would like to try my first ever spiral guide wrap and had a few questions. Background: I have read up on the different methods and the principal of how the line should flow through the guides. I have three rods ready for guides, an SJ736, MB765 NEO cut down to 6'9", and an MB 7108 for flipping Coosa grass and river brush. Fishing Alabama bass, Largemouth, and the occasional hybrid.

So, I started building rods a few years ago. Some of my fishing buddies started urging me to build some for them. I look at this site, and I see how technical everyone is, very technical with the guides, how many, where to place and weight. the weight of the guides! Rods and there flexes, composites, graphite, fiberglass, actions and power. So the other day a co-worker wanted a 7ft inshore rod, M

I haven't read the article from Rod Maker Mag. yet ( I let my subscription expire, I have renewed), But after seeing the article i decided to share my experience. Kent and I started a friendship @2 months ago. This spawned from our passion to make everything perfect. He came to my house with a rod wrapped to his specs. I showed him my 6-8 versions. I started this acid wrap after reading this

Time to lighten things up during these times. We have all had a major blunder while learning our craft. While in the moment i'm sure we all wanted to break the blank over our knee or send the spool of thread across the room like a 90mph fast ball, but looking back I'm sure we all laughed it off once things got back to going smoothly . I'll start it off. Many moons ago when I started building rod

The rod I just built is working great and i really like it so far with the limited use, when I built this I used a KT 10 and after that 3 KB 5 for the 60, 120 180 positions and KT 5 for the rest of the guides. My question is would it perform better if I used a KT 5.5 for the 60 degree position and then 2 KB for the 120 and 180 and rest KT. The reason I went with all the runners after the stripper

Just read the article on Magic wands in my Rodmaker mag, great article. I owned and just sold 8 JB Customs rods that were all spiral wrapped, I must say I liked those and especially all the casting type baits, especially the crankbait rods. The Pitching rod was nice as well but you had to make sure the line was not layed over to the right side of the tip top ( I pitch with the bait in my left ha

While I'm waiting for my NFC MB736 XRay to come in, I'm trying to figure out the guide train. I haven't decided on whether I'll spiral wrap it or not, but I'm considering both options for now. I've read through more than a few posts on the forum, but haven't read much on using the newer KR concept guides for spiral wrapping. Here are the options that I'm debating... Reel Setup -30 lb Daiwa

Hello All I am new to the forum. I have built about 9 rods scince starting this hobby a couple of years a go. Ive built 5 rods for bass fishing using St.Croix blanks and the rest have been rod kits from MudHole. I am in the process of building a bass rod using a St. Croix 2SW76MHF (7'6" - MH). I plan on using Mico Guides on the blank. Called St.Croix and they said it would work but would no

I'm trying to layout the guide train for a KR Concept casting rod. The blank is a NFC MB 665-1 HM and the guides I'm using are RV6 - KW5.5 - KB4 - KB4 - KT4 the rest of the way. I would like to use a spiral 0-60-120-180 layout. Is there a standard distance for the RV6 butt guide? The other guides I placed by trying to get the straightest line path and static testing? I'm new to all this but the

Hello, I have 3 rod builds to my name in the last 6 years, so I'm very much a novice. So far I've built a 5 Wt, a 8 Wt and a 12 Wt. I just ordered 2 casting rod kits from mudhole. One kit is a MHX MB843 and the other is a MHX L842. Both with cork split grips. These rods will have Abu 5601 C4's on them that are currently spooled with diawa J-braid X8 30 lb braid with a flouro leader and will

Well it’s Xmas season and it’s time to build some rods for presents... One of my presents will be a pitching rod built on a 7’6” Blank from American Tackle. Looking to do my first spiral wrap (casting) and was hoping to get some input or advice on guides and sizes that have worked best.

I did a little fishing today and had some luck. But it occurred to me that unlike most fishermen that concentrate on the hooked fish and getting it in and landed, I seem to concentrate on my rod when I have a fish on. I watch the way it bends and how the line flows through the guides, making sure the stress distribution is right. I notice the sound of the line when it goes through the guides on a

I'm trying to learn how to know what size guides I need for a casting rod. I saw in the library the spinning guide tutorial, but didn't see one for casting. I'm thinking of using Fuji guides, but I want very good guides on this rod, so any suggestions would help. Also, how do I know what sizes to order? I appreciate any help, or links to information that may explain this process. Thank you.

Plan to build a couple deep crank rods using RX6 FT905 blanks and the guide spacing provided from Batson (CB76MH). Budget components for reel seat and EVA grips in hopes to keep them each less than $100 each. Looking for some guidance on a light but dependable (KR concept) guide set for fluorocarbon lines, any recommendations? Thanks. PS, only doing 3 builds this winter, doing more ice fishing

New to this method on casting rods. Used to just following the recommended spacing by rod length. Building a 7 foot Rainshadow RX6 SP842 casting rod. I have the stripper guide (size 10) to a reduction guide (size 6) to the running guides (size 5.5) to a matching tip. I made a jig to support the rod at 45 degrees. I placed my stripper at 22.5 inches from the face of a baitcasting reel and the fi

Hello everyone, I want to make sure I understand the concept of guide placement. I have read the library articles and numerous threads here on the topic, but sometimes it takes numerous tries before I fully get something. All of this relates to a casting set up. In the articles regarding static testing, they say to flex the blank under a big load and adjust guide placements so that the

Hey guys I'm currently building a pitching rod on a medium heavy MHX FS904 blank with a size 6 double foot stripping guide and size 5 running guides and am having some issues with guide spacing. My first static test with a moderate load in the blank gave me spacing from tip top of: 2 1/4, 4 3/4, 8 1/2, 11 3/4, 14 3/4, 18 3/4, 25 1/2, 31 1/4, 37, 45, 51, and 57 1/4. Ok another question for you guys, I'd like to build my father in law a rod for hover fishing in the Columbia River. The blank I need needs to be sensitive enough to feel the bite and be able to handle a 3-5 oz weight with 20 to 30# braided line. Not so sure about the action because I'm still not to familiar with that, if anyone has any suggestions that would be great! Also any tips and tricks

This is just an update from a post a few weeks ago asking for suggestions on a senko rod for baitcaster. I was turned onto this rod in the previous post and do not regret purchasing it. I did an spiral wrap with micro guides, starting at 60, then 120, to 180. Did not develop any issues with this setup, first guide was 20 inches from the reel seat. I was using alps titanium guides with 8 flys

This is my first acid wrap and I noticed many are started at 0. I started mine at 60 to 120 to 180. I test cast it an it seems to nice. I am using size 8 fly guides as the transition guides. Using a low profile baitcaster. The line does not come near the blank, just wondering if I will have any other issues I might need to look at?
