I remember reading about using titebond for a cork handle build, which one is best. Thanks in advance.

Hi, just curious what finish is recommended for a stabilized wood reel seat insert. Is exterior varathane ok or is there a better coating.

I looked in the library and did a search but did not see an answer to my question. I have turned my first wood handle. I used clear wood turners finish after sanding. Should i leave it as is or put another finish on e.g. polyurethane? Any recommendations would be most appreciated

Hello all. wish I was down at the expo, but I will hope to make it next year!! I think I may have turned my wood down a little too much on my first seat. How much play should I have under the hoods? I assume I can make this up with tape but just making sure. Here is a pic: Thanks! Scott

Has anybody that turns their own wood handles tried finishing them using Hut Wood Finish? One of the features stated by the manufacturer is that it is formulated to give greater water repellency. I'm wondering how it would hold up over time. I turned a small sample of oak yesterday. I'm going to abuse it a little bit, ding it, get it dirty and the see if it can be polished up again. If reque

Hi all, I have made a few rods now and added my own yellow cedar handle to one of them. I have been using varathane classic coat spar varnish. I would like to know if using flex coat would be better. (I may also be incorporating some antler into my next handle.) Also, Is flex coat essentially the same is thread epoxy? Thank-you in advance, Matt

Hey Tom, I aquired some Leopardwood a year or so ago. I have sent some to a knife maker friend who was intrigued with it. What I want to know is, have you ever turned any? And if so,what does it look like? The end grain is ugly to me but the face grain is beautiful and very interesting. I personally am not a turner and have to farm out my work. Also, you ever turn Bacote' or Mesquite ? Rusty

Hello gentlemen. I have been turning domestic hardwoods for my grips, and i think it adds a nice touch, something different than the usual cork. I have been using tru oil for the finish and like the results, but recently have bought and turned some exotic woods including cocobolo. I would like to know how you guys finish these high oil woods as I have heard they resist the oil from curing. Feel f

I want to do a cork handle with wood at both ends. What is the best way to seal the wood? Can I use true oil on the wood and cork seal on the cork? How well will the wood endcap hold up? It is going to be a birthday present for my 23 year old brother and he will defanately take good care of it.

I do not have a lath yet and do as noted in the rod building book by using a hole saw to cut out the butt caps. On the butt caps I remove the pilot bit and use it on a drill press to cut out ones for the butt caps. I also have used some oak to make butt caps for the grandkids rods. After I cut out the but cap I turned it over and cut deep enough to embed a state quarter of the were they were bor

I'm in the process of trying to finish a heavily burled walnut fly grip with CA glue. I've gone through all the steps like I'm supposed to, but I'm still not getting a totally smooth or clear finish. First, unlike my last CA grip, the CA on this one isn't completely smooth. There's little holes here and there in the CA, so that even if I get a high polish on it, the little holes break up the s

Gidday again all. I've been looking in the pantry for some wood to make a butt for a rod I'm building. I've glued some different combinations together to see what looks good and I came up with a combination of camphor laurel in the main body with a detail ring of beach then a rosewood cap on each end. It looks good but one question about this. Will the camphor reek havoc with the fish with tha

Hey everyone, I am new as a member but have been lurking a while, this place is a great resource!! I build rods and Game calls, and I have been trying to use rod epoxy for some calls, as well as doing exotic wood handles and such.. I am currently using classic coat, and thinning it out a bit with Is Alcohol, I am not looking for a thick coat, just a smooth finish, one issue I am having is eye

I know that it is a member of the Rosewood family and is too oily to take a finish. I turned the piece to use in a grip using cocobola and acryli. I soaked it in a denatured alchol bath (3 baths) for about 12 hours per many suggestions/posts. The wood lost most of it's color which mostly came back after applying Tru Oil. My problem is that after 2 days the Tru Oil is still tacky. I obviousl

15. Epoxy ?
I was doing some research on wood stabilizing and found a site that gives a solution for stabilizing wood. I would like to stabilize some for a reel seat. My question is the mixture would be thinned with Xenyl by about 50-75% would the rod building epoxies work for this.

I have thought about this a few times before... but after recieving cork rings from 2 different suppliers in the last week... both advertised as "premium flor grade" (when it should have been advertised as "lathe practice material" instead) and priced pretty high, and both sets were substandard IMO. The basswood handle post from this evening intrigued me since I'm a longtime

I wanted to share a possible tip about applying Tru-Oil now that the season is changing and it seems like it takes a longer for Tru-Oil to dry. I have been reading through some forums, and found a gun-stock finisher that added Japan dryer to Tru-Oil to speed up drying time, seems like it does the job, with no ill effect on the outcome of the finish. I think it helps level the Tru-oil coat if you

I turned a handle out of Ziricote and put a coat of Tru Oil on it. It will not dry! I have read that some woods are too oily for some finishes. Any of you wood guys know what I should put on it to get a nice finish?

Has anyone used Teak wood to make reel seats.? It is oily naturally water repellant and insect repellant and would last a long time with just buffing for a finish.

Dave asked me about using CA as a wood finish so I thought I'd share my technique with everyone. Superglue brand glue is thin CA and is not the best for a wood finish. Most woodworking (not home improvement) stores will have CA in 3 grades thin, medium, and thick. Thick CA fills gaps the best and takes 1-2 minutes to setup. Thin sets up quick (5-10 seconds) and does not fill gaps as well. Mediu

I'm turning my own fly grips, reel seats, trim rings, etc. out of wood. I'm interested in using some stabilized wood, but I've never been able to find it in lengths long enough to do grips. Where can I find stabilized wood that is 1.5" X 1.5" X 6" or 7"???

Evening Guys, I have begun toying with the idea of turning my own reel seats. I'm going to get a mini lathe and try my luck. I've been doing some research online, but I'd like some input from you guys that do this. Is there a book (or video preferably) out there that can help me along my way? If I want a decent setup, what is the approximate cost? And which lathes do you prefer. Like I sa

At the suggestion of a well respected builder on this board, I am using Tru-oil for the first time on a grip that has natural wood, stabilized wood, and cork meeting one another. While it is very easy to work with, my application technique must be substandard as I am getting miniscule bumps (about the size of those tiny bubbles that sometimes end up in finish) but the layers I rub on are so thin

Can anyone tell me what the best way to varnish a wooden reel seat insert? should I varnish it first. or, should I just apply clasic coat to it first? if I should just apply the clasic coat dose any one know how to thin it with acetone. I read it some where but I can not remember where. Thanks for the help. Mitch

I just picked up a bunch of birdseye maple and flame maple for making reel seat inserts. I'm wondering if I should use some sort of stain to bring out the figure in the wood or just leave it natural. I will probably finish with Tru Oil. Anyone here have experience staining maple?

A few posts down it is asked where to find denatured alcohol. I find 91% isopropyl alcohol readily available. Will isopropyl be as effective as the denatured alcohol? ( I can't find my chemistry book and can't remember the difference!!!)

I contemplated making hardwood hosels and trim rings for cork grips until I noticed that some of the suppliers were selling hosels "impregnated" with something to make them ...? stable, shrink and crack resistant, waterproof. Will homemade hardwood hosels and rings (walnut, cherry, mahogany, oak) finished/sealed with multiple coats of urethane or other finish be stable enough for rod

A customer has asked me to make him a rosewood handle for a 6.5' spinning rod. Does anyone know who carries stablized (impegnated) wood in turning stock? I'll need a piece at least 12" long - better if it were 14-16".

What is meant by "stabilized wood". I would like to start turning some seat inserts and really don't know how to pick out the woods. Need some help on what to look for and if I need to treat or finish the inserts. Thanks, Steve
