Is there a way to make an epoxy ramp without a rod wrapper/dryer? I'm building my first rod with minimal overhead, nothing fancy just getting the parts together. When I drilled out my fighting butt the bit gouged out a bit of cork so I've got a void right where the blank enters. No big deal but now that it's on there it would be nice to conceal my noobery behind an epoxy ramp. Can it be done

I did a little searching, and find Elmer's wood filler paste as the most returned answer. Does the board have preferences or suggestions? I searched the board without success, perhaps chose the wrong words. Many thanks-

Which of these three common materials do you prefer for your grips? (Or do you prefer another material altogether?) Do you prefer one over the other for a specific reason or purpose? Mix them up? What's your rationale? I'm using CF more often these days. However, my love-affair with cork has not gone away by any means. To be honest, I've never used EVA because I don't like the feel nor look

What or why are preformed cork grips cheaper than the same grip made with individual cork rings?

I’ve been looking at some of the more economical wood turning lathes, under $200. What I am not seeing are lathes that can be fitted with mandrels. Of course I know nothing about these lathes and how they’re built, so it could be that I am overlooking something that is rather sample to retrofit. I’m assuming I need a mandrel in order to turn cork? Any suggestions?

Hey guys, I know it’s best to keep rod builds light weight and all, but I’m running into something that’s frustrating to me that I was hoping I could get some perspective on. I’m building on a blank that is just shy of 2 ounces in weight. I’m using an nfc carbon grip, a Lemke lc25 reel seat, and I turned an all rubberized cork fighting butt. I used fiberglass drywall tape for my arbor (I know

I’m deep in the trenches with learning to turn cork and as some of you may know and can relate, I have a lot of bad grips. What can I do with probably 100 rings worth of grips that are rejects? I’m trying to find a silver lining here to my frustration and didn’t know if I could possibly salvage these into something useful so I feel better about throwing away money haha.

I could use some help with "stains" on a new rod blank. It did not come from the factory this way, I somehow have small grease-like marks on various parts of the blank. It looks like I ate potatoes chips and didn't wipe my hands clean, and then handled the blank. I did put the reel seat on and wiped away the recess epoxy immediately, so I do not think this is the culprit. I used 91% i

Cork is porous and has this tendency to accumulate dirt and grime with use. It's no big deal to clean them. If I really want them clean I'll lightly sand them. I'm wondering if something can be applied that will make them shed the dirt easier without affecting the feel. Do any of you folks ever seal a cork grip? With what?

In other threads I have been mentioning and asking questions about building cork grips, and as usual, the membership of this site came through in flying colors, with many great answers, and suggestions. I just want to thank each one of you that have given suggestions and tips for making grips. I had already built one foam core carbon sleeved grip, and it was a lot of fun, so I knew building cork

I just started turning cork grips, and have my first one done. It turned out quite nice, with my only regret being that I didn't use better cork. I had read more than a few suggestions of starting and practicing with a lesser grade cork, and well ..... after finding out how relatively easy turning cork is, I find that I should have just went with the good stuff right off the bat. Now I will s

I am always looking for a better tool than a Stanley Surform to round my cork on my FlexCoat lathe. The SureForm chews-up the cork something terrible. And if not careful will cut too deep For those of you who do not have a wood/metal lathe and use turning chisels on a rest - consider buying a "Kutzall Wood Shaping Rasp". I bought an 8" half round in Fine and a Coarse. The Fine

What is everyone doing for cork handles…do you buy your handles already made or are you using the cork rings and shaping your own? I don’t do a lot of builds but am getting tired of suppliers not having stock available so was looking at mini lathes and cork rings. Also, for those of you doing your own handles, what grade cork are you using? This is a hobby and when I do build a rod, I am gener

I'm replacing all the wraps on a G Loomis spinning rod (SAR1084S) that has been heavily used by a local guide. All the wraps are cracked. The question is, how can I clean up this blank without sanding and recoating it? I've wiped it with denatured alcohol 3 times and acetone twice. It's getting better but it is still funky. Just keep wiping it down, or does anyone have a secret sauce to spee

Hello Everyone, Since manufacturers keep changing there lineup of rods, mainly the ones I like, I have decided to try and build my own. My "Old Favorites" I am hoping to duplicate are pre-Shimano G Loomis MBR743C GLX "casting" and a pre-Shimano BSR802S GLX Spinning Rod. I ordered a North Fork Composites SJ 736-1(X-Ray LMX) and a MB 736-1(X-Ray LMX). I plan to use the MB

Hi all - I've done a lot of reading on this topic, but there isn't too much clarity around what i'm looking for specifically. There are a few schools of thought, but I wondered if personal experiences would help to solve some of the challenges i'm concerned about. Firstly, I build my grips from individual cork / rubberized rings directly on the blank using a combination of 2 part bonding epox

I looked over my favorite fishing rods that get a lot of use the other day. Then, I made a decision. Time to do some restoration work on the grips. Sure, one can build a new rod and or modify an existing rod, but if a particular rod works very very well - it is nice to just freshen it up a bit. So, I took 16 of the rods that I use on a nearly daily basis and took them to the laundry

Hi, I'm a little embarrassed to post again so soon but I am doing (attempting to do) something I haven't yet done. I found one of my first rods I built from the mid 90's. It is a 9' 5wt St. Croix Avid. I traded the guy for a spinning rod. The reel seat was pretty beat up and ugly. The cork is dirty but I kind of like that look. I removed the seat without much problem. The seat that was on was one

As the title suggests, what lathe tool minimizes damage to cork while turning? Along the same milling vein, what turning speed seems to produce the best results? While realizing such a soft and inconsistent material as cork will always be prone to shredding and ripping chunks out while turning, there must be a specific tool which works better than all the others. Having limited experience, I am r

Hello, I just picked up a nice Lamiglas 8 1/2 foot. The builder had wrapped the cork all the way into the seating area, so in order to attach a reel, you have to crush a portion of the cork. I'm thinking I can just cut the excess off, but in case it goes the wrong way, I had a few questions about the pits in certain areas. First, would you suggest filling the pits on the cork handle, or re

you use granulated cork instead of flock? using the contained flock technique you can easiily cover your core with cork grains then just sand down to the smoothness you desire..no pits or glue lines in the handle, kind of a burl look but alot less costly to make..i want to try sawdust next..so many different kinds of wood dust..give it a try and report back.

Is there anything else that can be used to protect my cork handles because the cork seal on my rods tend to peel after being in the sun and fished for awhile.
