I'm just about out of my bottle of Chromaseal and I'm looking for your recommendations on a substitute. I purchased a bottle of Mudhole's version and well, it's not Chromaseal. The two times I've used it, it does not dry clear and even after coating with epoxy it left a slight opaque appearance on the bare blank's surface around decals. Anyone use Color Lock (U-40) or Flex Coat color preserver?

Generation 4 Vivid first takes…. For those not aware, Vivid is a new color preserver on the market from Andy Dear - of Generation 4 epoxy. With Chromaseal no longer available we’ve all been looking for a good alternative. Finally got a wrap done to give Vivid a go. Open chevron wrapped with Maderia. First pic is before application of Vivid. 2nd pic is after 1st coat. (2nd coat is dryi

I am almost out of Rodancer Chromaseal and started looking for another bottle only to read on their website (which I now remember) that they were acquired by Mudhole. Mudhole doesn’t carry Chromaseal so I guess I am asking anyone on here that used Chromaseal - what did you find that you like now? Just trying not to have have to buy the different brands and try them out. Thanks, Hood

Hi, I'm completing my first build and this site has been an immense help, so thank you all! I'm getting ready to epoxy my wraps and upon a small test, the color preserver makes the metallic accent threads seem very dull. I haven't tried an epoxy test but I'm guessing they won't get regain their sparkle with epoxy. I would skip the cp but I used too dark of a blue for the main color and without

Hello, I'm writing you to have support support for a problem related to stained wraps, using a clear nylon thread of size A (Power Wrap, Neon Pink color #361,CP). I made the wraps on the various guides, taking care to tighten them very well, and then proceeded with 3 coats of CP (Chromaseal). After having given the first coat of epoxy (TM LIGHT), I have verified the work and it is very bad

Recently, there have been a couple of topics on this forum concerning certain (blue) metallic thread fading over (a relatively short period of) time. Although I have a stock of different colored metallic thread, I rarely use them in favor of less flashy wraps / accents, but that is just my preference; there is a place and time for them. I started a topic concerning rod wrapping thread a few mont

Been using Gen 4 lite. Been very happy with it on ul and light rods with one coat. Did a med action and one coat not quite enough for me. Going to do a second coat. But not sure exactly when I will get to it. Anyone had any issues waiting maybe three or four days? Also anyone had trouble cleaning brushes with Gen4. I have ruined two brushes now. Did my usual acetone dip and wipe and the next

I have seen many people post regarding the LW-PX400 printer for labels. From what I have seen, its a really good one for labels. I attempted to use the p-touch label maker but the tapes were stiff and tough to use. Are the tapes for the LW-PX400 less stiff than the p-touch labels? I have also read that the printer comes with software which allows you to print more than just words. Anyone pri

Finally finished up all my stock of Gudebrod color preserver so I went with FlexCoat water based CP. Don't really care for it, first off it looks like elmers glue and it leaves the threads dull. They lose their brilliant color and end up being a dull or muted color from original. Is this common with the water based CP's or is there another brand ( preferably) a non water based product somewhere t

Hello All, Does anyone have a Video tutorial on applying finish over Rod Labels and long areas. I am still in the Trial and error stages of this process. I have been successful in the rest of my finishing techniques. My Guide wrap finishes are nearly perfect but I still struggle getting Long areas flat. The build I just finished I used Flex coat CP on the Blank before applying labels and applie

Hi...I'm back for more free, professional information. Hope you all don't get annoyed by my questions....I'm learning. I have wrapped a rod with a real good-looking red and inlayed with silver. It looks nice how it is. I just finished a rod with the same combo and when I applied the finish, of course the red went dark...almost a wine color. Still looks good but I now want to keep the red. I have

Hello - I wasn’t paying attention this morning and used U-40 cork sealer on my thread wraps instead of color preserver. My inclination is to let them dry and finish them like I normally would. However before I do that, I would like to understand if the cork sealer will interfere with the finish coat? At this point, I’m not worried about preserving the color. Thanks in advance!

I’ve only used color preserver (specifically chromaseal) twice and the first time I applied 3 coats and the end result was perfect. The second time I applied 3 coats and had the threads darken only slightly and had some patchiness if you look close. So do you really just need to do 3 coats or is there a trick to applying it and I just accidentally got it right the first time? I put on a libera

Getting around to finishing my latest build. Having color preserver issues. Always used U 40 Color lock in the past. Well I have now gotten three bad bottles. First froze in shipping. Next two there is a problem with. U 40 admits the issue, says it is still usable. I am not going to take the risk on a rod with 11 guides and a butt wrap. So need some suggestions. Last time I used a different co

Hello All, I hope your winter is going well. Here in Minnesota we just came out of a -20 below snap of fun and games! Anyway, have any of you found a solvent based color preserver that you like? Why is it that we had really great color preservers in the 70's and now it appears they're all water based and most people are not happy with them. I just ordered some of Al's Silk Color Rite. I know i

At my wits end. I've been building rods for 15 years at a count of around 40 and I've never had this happen. After finishing the decorative butt wrap with double diamond cross wraps (a staple in my bag), I applied a coat of color preservative as usual. After about about 5 minutes the threads softened up and lifted right off the blank, completely ruining the cross wrap. I used the same color p

I need some advice on how to improve the look of my thread work when using light colors, especially yellows and whites. On decorative wrapping I know about using a white under layer but it is when I get to the rod guides that I have issues. No matter how tight I try to wrap the thread together and burnish the bejesus out of the thread, the dark colors still bleed through. Since I am building

Hi builders! It’s been five years since the last time I finished a rod. In that time, my part B hardeners have yellowed. Is there any way to revive these? I have Pro Kote and some small bottles of Bullard Diamond II. I’ve heard of microwaving to decrystalize, but I’m not sure if that’ll do anything for the yellowing. With some red & white wraps, I’m concerned they’ll end up blood orange

I just applied a coat of Thread Master 2 part epoxy to my newly wrapped rod and large black spots are bleeding through. I used Bullard Thread Craftsman Twist Size A CT-GN/G, sealed it with 2 coats of Flex Coat Thread Sealer, let it dry overnight. The epoxy is still curing, but I am concerned about the black spots. I've never seen this before. Thanks Tom

How many coats of cp can I use? Did a not to bad wrap, put on three coats of cp but handled it a lot when I did the wraps on the guides. was wondering if another light coat would clean it up if I put it on and wiped it off or if you can use to much? or can I use something else to make sure its clean before I apply the epoxy. would appreciate any help with this thanks Robert.

I have my 2nd rod drying the guide wraps. The sage green color has darkened substantially to almost black. I will be using the rod so it's not a big deal but if I want to give any future rods to other people I will need to make sure the color is what is expected. The next rod I build I will have to invest in some color preserver. What is the best way to apply CP? Do you normally wrap the gui

Hi All, Hope everyone had a great weekend! I purchased an MHX blank recently to build a spinning rod. I picked one of the colour blanks - Metallic Red. The colour of the blank is much darker than I anticipated. More like a Burnt Red. It's hard to match a thread to in. I do think the white thread I have looks pretty good on it. It has a bit of a silver touch to it. I tried a test wrap a

There have been a number of previous posts regarding peel-and-stick decals and their tendency for the edges to lift after thread epoxy is applied resulting in quite a few methods to eliminate the problem. I must have been lucky with the first few as no issues were encountered until attempting to speed up the curing time by placing the rod, thread finish about ¾ cured, in my composite oven at 120

Hope this is ok...... I am looking for 4 4' sections of rod blank to use to do an extensive finish and CP comparison. I am going to e getting all the major rod finishes and CP's and putting them all through testing to compare each one. I do not have any broken blanks laying around so I am wondering if anyone out there does? I am looking to get 2 in gloss and 2 in slate/matte finishes al

Just did my first build using Maderia thread. Everything went well until this morning. I started putting on the first coat of flex coat and the colors started washing out right away like I'd used no cp at all. Thankfully I only did one guide. I used gudebrod color preserver on all the wraps, one coat, a few days ago so it was plenty dry. I've used one coat of Gudebrod cp for many years on gudebro

After I apply my flexcoat color preserver it doesn't dry clear. There is always a milky appearance (it is very noticeable on a darker thread and looks terrible on black). What am I doing wrong? I have two bottles - one recently purchase and an older bottle. They both do the same.
