What are the more standout/tried and true blanks in the NFC lineup? I’ve studied the catalog pretty extensively, but after reading accounts of some disparities (power of the SJ703 versus SJ732 for example), I’m curious what the crowd thinks. What are the rockstars in the lineup? Obviously, opinions vary. But I’m sure there are some that are more popular than others for good reason. Sorry if this

I perhaps opened a tiny can of worms on my last post about the “Choker” guide on a spinning rod :-) … but this question should be easier: I plan on building a nine foot, 4 piece, 8 weight fly rod. Haven’t bought the blank yet, but what size guides … snake eyes and stripping guides … would you suggest I purchase? Also, one more guide than the length ie 10 guides … or should I try a couple of ext

I have been building for a few years and always used the same technique for finding the rod's spine. However, I have been wondering if my method is correct. I have read a lot of ways to spine and watched many YouTube videos, but something doesn't seem right to me. Most of the discussions about spinning the rod say to roll the rod until it jumps/pops etc. Then mark the rod. So here's my que

Hello, I've been building rods for personal use and since I live in the city they've all been 3pc mostly using Batson Revelation RX6 since I travel by motorcycle or plane to my fishing destinations. I did some research and it would appear my airline allows up to 2 rods + reels + tackle and counts them as a single checked item. I'm lucky to have status with them some years so even that checked

Hello All - This is my first post, as well as my first endeavor in rod building. I just pulled the trigger on orders to NFC and The Rod House to get all of the components for my first 3 rods. The blanks I chose were the (1) NFC SB-722 and (2) NFC SB-724. I bought two different blanks in an attempt to hit a perfect match on the NRX 852s. The NFC $75 dollar deal on X-ray blanks was tempting enough

Good afternoon, Over the weekend I broke my trout rod about 16” from the tip. It was a RodGeeks C266MLF that handled 10-14” trout well. I’ve always been a St Croix fan and my last “factory” rod that I used for trout was a 7’ ML Premier. But now that it’s not repairable, I’m looking to build a new rod and considering NFC. I mostly am fishing larger streams, about 125-150ft wide, with an ave

Trying to figure out what I want to do with two NFC blanks I have sitting in the basement. One is the new SJ-703-1 C602 blank (1/4 - 3/4 Ex-fast) and the other is a MB-733-1 (1/8 - 3/8 Fast). I was planning to build one of them as a spinning walleye jigging rod, mostly freestyle jigs 1/4 - 1/2 oz. and maybe even some lighter marabou jigs. The other would be for baitcasting light Texas rigs an

I want to build a bait caster for a kid I know. My guess is he will throw crank baits, soft plastic frogs, and whatever else he can think of. He won't be fishing heavy weed cover. He's young enough that he can't drive so he bikes from home to the Root River in Rushford Mn. The river has a pretty healthy small mouth population as well as trout, walleyes and northerns and assorted rough fish. I use

Hey everyone, I'm looking to build a 5'6" spinning rod to replace one built in the past. The one I'm using now is a CRB561L through Mudhole. The blank is lacking the action I prefer for the baits I throw, the power isn't the issue it's just the action. I throw for largemouth, smallmouth and sometimes crappie on a bobber rig with minnow. Senkos, flukes, small top water frogs(1/5-1/4oz), bitsy

Hi, I am looking for recommendations on a blank to make into a spinning rod mainly for tossing soft plastics. Looking for a 2-piece, MF, L, around 6'6" plus or minus a few inches. What are your favorites?

I have a bunch of NFC X-ray blanks yet to build. I like them. Does anyone have any opinions on or experience with the Delta series of blanks? How do they differ from the X-ray series? I'm looking to use inshore....trout/redfish/snook.

"As Iron sharpens Iron, so does one man sharpen another" The below is meant to kick off a discussion on a topic that gets a lot of attention, specifically "sensitivity" as it relates to fishing rods or blanks. Sometime in 2012, North Fork Composites (our engineers) were approached by a customer that had a very unique requirement - a composite/lightweight portable antenna

Flippin' & pitchin' is a big deal down here in Florida. One of the most common techniques used for bass fishing in cover. So I wanted to start a thread about the flippin' & pitchin' reels, and ask each of you what your requirements are for them for this technique, and how you match it to a rod and use it? I hope we can get into the function and operation of the reels because there a

In light of the recent discussions which reveal a strong desire on the part of many rodbuilders to better know the product they will receive when ordering blanks/rods, I suggest that the blank/rod manufacturers develop a universally agreed-to correlation between the commonly accepted, familiar, subjective rod descriptions and the objective CCS values. This would apply only to blanks/rod intended

In thinking of cutting back that NFC 705 SM to 6ft. How do you cut a blank? What can I use the left over rod piece for (reel seat insert, extend another rod)? The goal here is to have a rather short rod for fishing under the dock I'm standing on, and the boats there next to it. These bass are 4-7 pounds and smart - it's brutal crystal clear water like 35+ft visibility at least and always. I've

Hello all - first post. Got my son into fishing about 10 years ago and now he is a freshman in college on a college bass fishing team. He took my boat and most of my rods to chase his fishing dream so I decided I would start building my own rods for my own use and also to start replacing the hodge-podge of factory rods he and I have collected over the last 10 years. I'm working on my first bui

I read somewhere that the SM version and HM version of the same spec rod that the SM will be softer. I was looking to get something like a moderate fast so I compared a bunch of rods and saw the MB705 HM looked relatively fast and the SM version of the same rod looked slower, so I grabbed the SM. But considering another purchase and comparing what I just bought to other blanks to balance my setup

I need help on what a great not just good chatterbait blank would be in the 7’ to 7’3” range. I prefer some give but need more sensitivity. I throw mostly a 1/2 oz chatterbait. Right now I’m using a cb907 from mhx and like it but looking for a shorter more sensitive blank. I’ve considered the hybrid 705, hybrid 7106 or 765 NEO (cutdown to 7’3”) and the mb724 delta. Open to all other blanks too. T

Can anyone help me find comparable blanks, so I can build my first rod? The faster I make my selection, the sooner I can get into the game!!! I'm looking for short, ultra light powered rods, that I can fish small in-line spinner-baits, and small spoons, small floating minnows and small jerk baits, for small bass, (big - hopefully) crappies, and (big - hopefully) sunfish, on 4-8 lb mono (or may

What are your GO TO rods for your FAVORITE kinds of fishing? I'm curious what some of the best rod builders and fishermen on this forum reach for first. New to rod building and don't have lots of rods yet? Chime in with what you do have and why you like it. Have a couple favorites for the same category? Freshwater and/or Saltwater? Fly, Spin, Cast? Go for it! Also, I thought it might be h

I have fished the Revelation blanks quite a bit - and they fish very well. Have not done much fishing with the Immortal/RX8 for a while, and I think there were a few changes from years ago. Can anyone comment on how much a difference in feel you see between them? There does not seem to be a big weight difference on the Immortals vs. the Revelations, which is probably to retain durability, so r

Hi can anyone tell me how sensitive the point blanks are? The highest end rod I have is a poison adrena and I'm hoping they are at least on the same level if not more. I'm gonna try diving down the rabbit hole of building custom rods. Just want to know how it compares to other massed produced rods as well as maybe other manufacturers blanks before pulling the trigger. Thanks in advance.

I have just started into the adventure of rod building and can already tell it might become addicting. I am in the process of my first build of a light plastics and jig rod on a rain shadow Rx10 ETEC72M-SS and am wanting to build a cranking rod. Trying to understand the rating numbers for different blanks, been reading about the ccs but don't really have a handle on it. So I thought I would as

Frog rod? Heavy jigs? Big poppers? What's this thing do well? At 2.1 oz this thing really has my interest. I've been unable to find anything on it other than from the factory or Kyle welchers opinion.

So, I have a question regarding the guides of a rod. If I have a lighweight rod and one builder adds 9x torizite eyes but the other adds 13x torzites How will this influence the performance of the rod? The extra eyes(0.12g) will be added to the top (so less spacing). Blank = Mitagi TR78 SUPER NIMBLE MINNOW

I’m interested in getting a couple X-Ray blanks for my drop shot preferences. I drop shot for smallmouth bass on the St. Lawrence River in semi deep water with heavy current. I mainly use 5/8oz drop shot weights but will throw 1/2oz if the conditions allow. What would you guys recommend for my application? Thank you!

I acquired an older Calstar 6465 XH-B that I thought would make a great rail rod. It's so stiff that finding the spine the usual way by having the butt on the floor and applying pressure against the blank while supporting the tip just wasn't getting it, so I used the straightest axis to find it. That worked well. Everything was going smoothly until I glued up the aluminum reel seat. It required v

Hey guys I got more beginner questions. This will be a long read lol. I’ve finished all my bass rod builds for the moment, and my co angler is really liking what I’m doing and wants a few made. I had to explain to him that I’m using premium components for mine and it would be around $300 in hmm just parts. He was shocked lol. He asked if I could assemble something more budget friendly but still
