1. BFS build
I’m still pretty new to rod building and this forum but I’m head over heels for rod building I just got done with my first build a rainshadow immortal 6’10” m xf spinning set up. Now I’m thinking of building a bfs rod as well for smallmouth river fishing and large mouth as well I’m considering the nfc SJ 703-1(X-Ray LMX) but I’m completely open to other options for blanks and components. I still

I am building a spinning rod with Fuji VSS reel seat and Sk2 hidden thread nut. Have the NFC Carbon grips. Read somewhere that the ATC Matte fore grip sleeve matches the NFC grips nicely and they are a great match.
My problem is my blank OD is 13.6mm and the inner sleeve ID Is 18.7mm. I need to find something that will take up the 5mm but still allow the hidden thread nut to turn (so no rod

Hello,
I ordered my first casting reel seat with a unihood to see how they assemble and I am wondering what people typically do for trim or a foregrip. I was unaware that I couldnt just slide a foregrip down the blank and glue it up next to the reel seat like a non unilocking hood.
The reel seat is a G2 casting seat. I see American tackle makes a long trim piece to fit the seat and make th

I'm sure the general consensus would be not to do this, but I feel like in order to achieve what I am after. I'm left with no alternative. With that being said, do the main manufactures follow a set standard. For example, does the thread pattern for Fuji, American Tackle, PacBay, Sea Guide, and Batson match. Could I use a Batson or American Tackle reel seat, but a Thread Hood from say Sea Guide o

Question 1 - I apologize if this sounds ridiculous, but I was curious from a rod building and even use stand point. I've noticed a trigger is not on spinning reels and they also seem to be missing from fly fishing reels seats as well.
Why is the trigger there and what purposes does it serve, and the second part being. Can or has anybody used a reel seat intending for a spinning rod and just flip

Okay, so on my first go around. While I felt I had to make some compromises in designing and building my first 2 rods. I still feel like I more or less achieved what I was after. Some of the visuals I was trying to achieve didn't work more due to my lack of experience with doing threads wraps. I can admit I was trying to achieve something that my skill set wasn't quite ready for. I also made a ba

I am a big fan of the soft touch matte carbon grips from Northfork Composites. I'm looking for a way to trim them out on a Fuji VSS16 spinning reel seat ( ).
First, I like to pair the VSS16 with a KSKSS/ASH hidden thread hood. This setup is actually shown in the grip product pics on the NFC website ( ), but not with a 1K matte carbon thread sleeve as I'd prefer.
I believe I've finally

Hello rod builders ???? I´m a novice and hope i can get some advice here. It´s going to be a baitcasting rod, lure weight 1-5g if possible and it will be used on a larger lake with perch, rainbow salmon, trout and some pikes. Not really interested in finding pikes but sometimes they bite. I would appreciate feedback on my choices or other recommendations. Also if you have any recommendations for

Don @ American Tackle
The G2 Carbon Handles and Compressed Carbon Tech G2 reel seats by the American Tackle Company are redefining the fishing rod handle as you know it.
We brought these and they were available at ICRBE for the first time and the response was AMAZING!
The handles utilize carbon material construction while the CCT seats use genuine carbon injection molded Compressed Carbon Technology to provide

I don't know if that image worked or not. If not, can anyone tell me how to attach images to my post???
Anyways, I'm looking for all 3 parts in the image for some builds I'm working on. I have the Fuji PTS reel seats, I just need the carbon tube and trim rings for the hidden fore grip. I tried calling Johnnys pond, but no response, so I'm not sure they are open anymore or not?
Can any

Hello. I'm new to the forum and rod building all together. I've got my first blank coming in the mail hopefully this week, and I'm excited to get started. Either way, I've been told Matagi is pretty easy to deal with as far as purchasing from them. Is there any other companies like Matagi with a wide array of unique components?

14. Winding checks
A friend of mine asked me to build him a rod to replace a Duckett Micro. Magic he broke in a rod locket accident. He asked me to try and match it as close as possible. My question is does anyone know who makes the winding checks or some similar to them that they use? Also is there a way to salvage the ones off the broken rod without damaging them?

I don't care if it is called hot shot, popping, spin jig or anything else - what is the highest end version of this blank? I am thinking about something to throw Berkley Gulp a long way from shore.

Hi,
I just wanted to ask if anyone knows why there isn't a single rodbuilding manufacterer that supplies solid titanium winding checks, trim rings and other rod building metal parts? I used to find them in the Matagi catalogue (fuji metal parts) but I believe they also don't sell them anymore...I never understood why people spend a lot of money on solid titanium guides and then finish a custom r

Merrick tackle used to carry Matagi components. A customer asked me to build him a rod with Matagi butt cap / blue aluminum spacers. Does anyone on the left carry Matagi?

I have a customer that wants me to make him a jigging rod using a Black Hole Rod Blank 350 gram. Does anyone know about these blanks? Where to get them? How much they are? I have seen revolver rods at a local outfitter made with these blanks. They retail for approx. $360. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

21. Alumium parts
Hi all, I was wondering if anyone here can tell me where to find some good aluminum trim parts for my custom rods. I'm familiar with Matagi and some of the new Mudhole stuff, in fact I recently built a rod for my wife using Mudhole's Project X parts and we're both very impressed! I'm just looking to expand my horizons a bit and the Matagi parts are just plain hard to get. Does anyone have any

I will have one of these swim bait blanks waiting on me when I get home. I am thinking about doing a double foot 8,7,6,6....for the guides. Should I go a little bigger on the guides and stay away from a spiral wrap? Or would it be good to go?

25. Matagi stuff
After looking at all the Matagi eye candy on the photo page yesterday (thought they were advertisements at first... lol), I want some. Older posts that I've found note extremely long waits sometimes, upwards of a few months. Is there still a long wait to get this stuff? I've got the catalog of the large wholesale place in NY but can't call right now.
Does anyone keep a large variety of these

Ordered some matagi winding checks. They were the same model check (both gold) but they were no where near the same shade. Is this normal for matagi?
I'm going to call tomorrow but thought I would ask to see other folk's experience with them.

Hey fellas, has anyone used the Matagi KD or SD gear?
If so, are those parts just threaded decorative replacements for the locking nut for Fuji seats?
How about the CF tubing, not the tubing for interchangeable rear grips? Can it be used to go the full length from the end of the blank to the reel seat and beyond (providing sufficent tubing length)? Or is it used as trim?
What I am tryi

29. dissapointed
i'm becoming more and more disappointed with the options (or lack thereof) of winding checks. you would think by now some company would start producing a large array of decorative winding checks. all there is to choose from right now is:
1. simple rubber ones
2. knurled aluminum ones
3. expensive matagi checks with hit and miss availability
4. very expensive arcane checks on mudhole

I sold a rod a few months ago and the customer called me last week and said the rod brok while hooking a 1 lb bass. This is a crankbait rod so no monster hookset involved. I thought for sure it was a defective blank. I removed all the components I could and sent the blank to the manufacturer.
They told me they saw an impact mark (I looked thouroughly at the blank and saw none) and it was not
