Good morning all. I went to finish a rod yesterday and found my epoxy hardener jelling up. I could not get an accurate amount to flow. I thought about heating it up, but i am not sure if that would be a good idea. I am tired of having this issue and then having to go get a rod building company to send another bottle that takes days to get. So my question is what do you all use for epoxy an

I’ve got some flexcoat that seems be pretty discolored. I’ve taken a pretty long hiatus in rod building and repair. I want to say like 5+ years. I’m currently testing it out to see if it still hardens completely. Do any of y’all have experience using old epoxy or finish?

I have some Flexcoat I bought 10 years ago. It's contained in a pair of syringes. It looks like it may have yellowed a bit but, not having some fresh stuff, perhaps that is its' normal color. I coated a test wrap and came out good. It had ~ 45 mins of working time. It leveled out good. Within eight hours it had dried enough that I couldn't make a finger print in it. I'm inclined to use it. Th

I have a graphite rod that I sanded and painted lightly with a paint and primer mixed spray paint with a multicolored fade and have wrapped the butt end and have not done anything else to. This is my very first rod and I don't know what kind of clear coats, color protectants or anything to use. I would be VERY APPRECIATIVE of some experienced help!! I used poly thread and I believe the spray p

Finally finished up all my stock of Gudebrod color preserver so I went with FlexCoat water based CP. Don't really care for it, first off it looks like elmers glue and it leaves the threads dull. They lose their brilliant color and end up being a dull or muted color from original. Is this common with the water based CP's or is there another brand ( preferably) a non water based product somewhere t

Wonder if anyone can recommend easy cheap nothing fancy DIY way to dye a small amount of epoxy. I glued up a NFC carbonfiber IPS grip. Was not liking the eva ends. Found the american tackle G2 grip winding checks fit the NFC grips perfectly. I finished the end of the rear grip and the butt with these. Unfortunately the smallest check was way larger than blank diameter. So I used a masking t

Through my composite experience, I am aware that virtually all epoxies will eventually yellow, some more than others. Whether in the cured state or still liquid in the bottle/can, this can be most commonly due to oxidation or UV factors. In my five years of rod building, I have experienced yellowing, even browning, of the thread finish hardener while still in the bottle, but not to an excessive,

What's the typical shelf life on epoxy and thread finish? This is the ProPaste and ProKote brand. They've been used before and have been stored in the basement (climate controlled) for about 2 years.

Well. I built my dream steelhead rod,it fished phenominal on a recent trip, caught a bunch of fish and I was super stoked until I was casting and felt the butt cap come loose. I looked and the epoxy was in there but it appears the arbor failed(white masking tape). The I noticed the handle was loose. The foam arbor to the reel seat closest seemed to be well glued to the handle tube, but it slipped o

I've been using Threadmaster lite exclusively for the past three years. I warm the resin and hardener in warm water prior to measuring and mixing, then mix 3 cc's of each for three full minutes before applying. Lately, I've noticed that the mix gets thick very quickly after I start applying it and it seems more like a high-build than a lite. I had been applying two coats but when it gets as th

I have some U40 Epoxy Paste about 5 yrs old that I discovered. The hardener has a slightly darker amber appearance than the new paste I just acquired. I mixed a batch of this and it cured fine. My question is there a shelf life on this product, will it not perform the same as the newer batch that I have or should I just throw it out?

Not tying to start any arguments, but a day ago somebody asked about epoxy shelf life. The seller says it is six months. So is this six months from the time you get it, or was it six months from the time it was made bottled? And if it is from the time it was made and bottled, how do you know how long it sat on the dealers shelf?

It’s been covered many times about epoxy shelf life. However, I’m wondering if a bottle of ambered hardener can be hastened to be even darker. My vintage build was originally done with marine varnish. I can always buy a bottle of Rod Dancer varnish...but now I’m staring at an old bottle of ambered Pro Köte and wondering if I can just darken the hardener up in the sun...thereby giving thinned epo

Hi builders! It’s been five years since the last time I finished a rod. In that time, my part B hardeners have yellowed. Is there any way to revive these? I have Pro Kote and some small bottles of Bullard Diamond II. I’ve heard of microwaving to decrystalize, but I’m not sure if that’ll do anything for the yellowing. With some red & white wraps, I’m concerned they’ll end up blood orange

I have been conducting a rod building class for Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing here in Omaha. Its been great fun and the rods are coming along really well. But, and a big but, some of my Veterans have complained that the epoxy isn't drying. That it stays tacky forever. They say they are mixing according to the directions, 50/50 mix. I checked the epoxy and it is a 1;1 mixture. So I am a

I have read a lot of threads about shelf life of Pro Kote. Most discuss color changes. I have some that has been sitting on the shelf for about a year or so. It mixes fine, nice and clear after I warm both up in hot water. But when I apply it, it goes on lumpy. By that I mean, as I apply it with a brush and work it down the blank, the brush pushes epoxy in a little lump for lack of a better

To all; A glorious good day. At the risk of opening an unending debate, or not receiving any replies at all due to all you long-time wrappers going through the same question once again, I will be appreciative of your insight and opinions concerning rod blank refinishing. I can hear you now, “Not this again!”, and I can’t really blame you. But I am new to wrapping and have some of my own ideas/th

What is the best epoxy to use to mount grips and reel seats? I have used 5 min epoxy on the first two rods I built. I bought some rod bond a while ago which brings me to my next question. Is there a shelf life on epoxy? My rod bond I bought almost two years ago but never opened it. I also have some other epoxy for guides which is old and unopened. Should I just get new epoxy or use what I have?

I have only built a few rods and this web site has been invaluable to a newbie like me, thank you! I have a question about Rod Bond, does it have a shelf life? I have some that I used about 18 months to 2 years ago. Both parts still "look" OK, but when I mixed a test batch the resin seemed extra thick. It also seemed that it took a long time to harden ( I realize when it hardens it is s

The Flexcoat High Build Resin that I have been using is turning a cloudy white and getting thick. I searched the forum but nothing came up. I have not left the top off or accidentally got hardner mixed in it so what could be wrong. Does this stuff have a shelf life?

Greetings, Can anyone who has experience with Pro Kote finish give their opinion? What have you noticed in reference to ease of use, yellowing, pot life, application of heat, etc, etc. Also the same for the Pro Paste. I have tried to get the company to reply but had no luck. I will take emails if needed. Thanks for your time. Pat Barnard

I have been using ProKote epoxy and have had good luck with it, but when I opened the blue bottle yesterday, (the resin half) it was thick and white. The hardener however seemed to be fine. The cap seemed to be tight, but I had discarded the plug that comes in the bottle top. Did air get to it? It has been in a temperature controlled room, so I don't think it got too hot or too cold. This is the

So I've been working on a lightweight glass rod off and on for awhile now. Awhile back I finished the wraps with flexcoat another builder had given to me, it appears the epoxy was old and wouldn't cure or I didn't mix it correctly? To be sure I threw it away and started using flexcoat I had from another build. Had cleaned the wet wraps with alcohol to remove the uncured epoxy and re-wrapped with
