I'm considering getting a new power wrapper and have been researching them as extensively as I can because obviously they're not cheap. So........ if you were to buy one tomorrow, which one would you buy, and why?

I’m struggling with my alps chuck and the wobble it’s imparting. I bought the wrapper with this chuck already installed. It worked great for over a year. Everything is still tight. I can barely tell it’s wobbling without a rod in it, but when I’m wrapping a rod (or more significantly when I’m epoxying thread wraps and therefore spinning faster) the wobble is very noticeable and making my work

I have a section of a rod wrapper equipped with the alps upgraded chuck and the live center on the opposite end. My mandrel is 3/8 about 15 “ long. At high speed, everything looks great. No wobble at all. However , my grips are not coming out round. They are visibly OVAL! I’m using a sureform file, and, at the moment, turning burl cork. But, I have the same problem turning foam. I thought I’d ch

I’ve been looking at some of the more economical wood turning lathes, under $200. What I am not seeing are lathes that can be fitted with mandrels. Of course I know nothing about these lathes and how they’re built, so it could be that I am overlooking something that is rather sample to retrofit. I’m assuming I need a mandrel in order to turn cork? Any suggestions?

There are three kinds of CF grips that I have seen so far: 1. Tube Type: Open at one or both ends (like the NFC Soft Touch). These are hollow and/or have a foam arbor installed in a part of the tube. 2. Sausage Type: (like some NFC and CFX). These are enclosed, with material folded over both ends. 3. Tenon Type: (like some NFC and CFX). These have a tenon cut into one or both ends to fit a r

As an admitted weight weenie, I am looking for some arbors that are (as the title states): rigid, light, and thin. The outer diameter needs to be at least .55 inch or 14mm. The inner diameter, the smaller the better. Even a solid disc would be better as I can drill it myself. Some of the blanks I have is 4mm or so and no arbor I have found has a hold that small. I suppose that I can ge

Ok so i have not jumped head first yet, but have done some research leading up and wanted to get some opinions or guidance from those with actual experience. I am planning to do some smaller grips for casting and spinning rods with cork and eva. What i was planning to use is something basic, with a corded drill as the power source (one have should be sufficient with 2500rpm). I have looked at som

Other than speed is there any benefit an individual rod builder realizes from using a power rod wrapper?

Looking for dc motor from starting voltage to 12 volts that will go 1200 to 1500 RPM max. Is there such a motor or close to it? I am making a dedicated turning center for finishing cork grips so a heavy duty motor is not needed but not out of the running. My plan is to go direct drive and eliminate any speed reduction hardware. Presently I adapt my wrapper to my mini metal lathe and do m

So I posted a few weeks ago i bought a Wen 3424T wood lathe so I could start making my own cork handles. Bought the tailstock live center and a drill chuck, tried putting the 18" x 1/4" mandrel in that setup and its too long. I also purchased a Nova G3 chuck, Nova mini spigot jaw set which came today, put that on the lathe and it wont tighten down to 1/4", so that doesnt work eithe

Hello All Rod Builders I recently got back into building rods again. I was using my Turncrafter Pro#TCLPRO sanding down eva grip then suddenly my mandrel got loose from the chuck at high speed. Luckily I acted fast and turn it off. Try it a second and third time ,same issue. Soo dangerous. The chuck I have on the lathe is the same kind Renzetti uses on there power wrapper. Not a good chuck f

Happy New Year to all! Roger Wilson recently helped me with the electrical aspect to upgrade my self-built power wrapper to a power wrapper PLUS LATHE as well. It turned out exceptionally well and I am happier than a pig in slop!!! Thanks again, Roger! For those of you who use a lathe to turn grips in general, cork in particular, what is the most invaluable turning/shaping tool you use? Tom K.’

I ran into Morris Schlesinger this past Saturday at a local woodworking event. The injury that prevented him from attending and presenting at the 2019 Expo is completely healed and he is making preparations to present several seminars and demonstrations at the upcoming 2020 Expo in February. In addition to his usual, day-long ongoing, hands-on demos, he will be presenting on the following topics:

As title, , if I decide to turn the handle myself for spey rod, is tail stock neccessary ? I have the ALPS Power wrapper, which could be added the ALPS tail stock (another $165, quite expensive ) I know the tail stock is used to hold the other end of the mandrel / blank. But I check the Mudhole video and they turned handles on the "RBS handle turning kit" which the mandrel is

Here is a view of a large (1/3rd hp) 120V DC motor connected to a Taig head stock and Taig chuck. The DC motor is a 120 DC motor of about 1/3rd hp. The speed can be varied from 0-3000 rpm by changing the voltage on the DC power supply. The DC power supply was constructed using an AC variac followed by a full bridge rectifier and a smoothing capacitor. The motor is connected

I would like to do a survey, with your help, to find out what are the most popular lathes used by rod builders for future articles on tools I will be doing. Thanks in advance for your input.

So my brother and i were screwing around earlier, he has a 4 jaw chuck, a Jacobs super chuck, various live centers and spur centers.. With the 4 jaw on the head stock and a 16" drill bit chucked up in the jacobs at the tail we started drilling.. His lathe has about 3" of travel.. I was nervous starting the lathe back up after moving the tail in..then it smoked a bit lol.. We stopped

Hi finally back after a long sickness. I'm ready to take the big jump to a rod lathe, I want to make cork handles and maybe do some fancy wraps. I am completely lost in all the late and grate wrappers and lathes and wonder if someone can help, Renzetti is just tooooo much and wonder what is best just below that. Nick R.

Hi everyone, I'm considering buying a lathe to turn handles and reel seats. As well as likely get into some woodworking projects with it. Looking for any recommendations on what to look for. Don't want to spend too much, but also don't want to end up with junk by being too cheap. Any recommendations here? What should I be looking for? From my early research the potential problems I'm se

Hello all, I have recently gone through the process of changing the power setup on my Renzetti Craftsman with a DC mini gearbox motor. I wanted to post the data of this conversion if anyone is considering the change over. What made me want to look for other options than the 1/10 hp motor that I bought with the wrapper was to gain more control(on the lower RPM side), use the wrapper as a dryer

The lathe I use for my cork grips is one of those heavy cast metal affair. It's a bit of a paint to use as I have to drag it outside on a metal cart to avoid dust all over my work space. (Yes, I don't have a good vacuum system.) All I need is to turn grips up at 5 inches long. So my lathe can be very short - say up to 5.5" is enough. (If I need longer, I can just turn two parts and join

Looking to purchase one. Not familiar with them at all . Simply looking to shave off some of the fore and rear eva grip of an already built 2 piece rod that looks 1.25 inch in diameter. Will any of the lathes work for an already built rod or specific one I should buy? Thanks, Mark

I'm preparing to build and turn my first cork ring grip on my mini lathe. I've read on here and elsewhere about building grips and it seems like most builders favor various epoxies and Titebond. Is there any harm in using regular Elmer's Carpenter Wood Glue? I used to use it a lot for furniture making and it works extremely well in that capacity but I'm curious why I don't read more about it bein

After years of procrastinating while turning small reel seats, etc. on my Renzetti lathe with the standard 1/10th hp motor, I decided to buy the, almost $200.00, turning motor with bracket listed in the Renzetti online catalog. I already have the Renzetti tail stock and tool rest and would like to continue using my Renzetti lathe for this purpose as opposed to buying another additional wood or m

Good evening ladies and gents, First time posting on the forum but I must say I have learned a lot from you guys. I’ve searched the forums as well as the internet and haven’t been able to find parts or manuals for an older Custom Power Wrapper. I was just given an older model and would like to restore it to an up and running machine. I’ve found the belts on Anglers Workshop but I’m not sure if

I want to glue and shape cork pieces together to form flyrod grips. Will I need a wood lathe? And are there any cheap, but good, mini wood lathes to fit on a workbench? And do both head stock and tail stocks need chucks to firmly secure a steel mandrel placed through cork stock (i.e. glued together) like you have on a power drill? Has anyone ever made a wood lathe using a power drill
