Tom: Just got 2 original Loomis Casting rods to replace existing reel seats, both rods had masking tape reel seat bushings. The bushing were in excellent shape I have used tape bushing on Fly and UL rods with no issues, but I am going with fiber bushing on the Loomis rods, just my personnel preference. Built a lot of Saltwater Spin Rod, but this is a first for me, A customer brought in a Custom SW Spin rod and with what appears to have Flock Heated Tubing for Butt and fore grip. He also brought a matching blank (moon blank) for me to make a matching rod. My question is the shrink tubing installed right to the blank or does it require some sort of arbor or a additional gluing process. Is

Daryal: I have been using Flex Coat High Build for many years, if mixed correctly and dried in 70 -75 degrees, and rotating 3 to 4 hours should be good to go, I leave it for another 24 hours to cure completely. Rich Kline Custom Rods

Jeff: I built many wire line rods for both Monel and Stainless, I use Carboly guides and tip tops, They ware very well, and never had problems with them. Braced ones are the better choice. The guides and tips come in standard sizes. Rich Kline Custom Rods

Gregg: I don't know if the taper is the same on the blanks, I.G.F.A. blanks never list a taper. Most other type of blanks due. I would check with the Calstar they would be able to answer that question. All the I.G.F.A. Rods I build I never came across a taper in the spec's.s. Rich Kline Custom Rods

Gregg: The Cal-Star regulation series RT80-B 5' 6" length has a butt 1.005, assuming you are using the Calstar 645XXBH-B 6' 6" Blank with a 1.16 butt.. The Blanks have a different taper, the regulation rod has a tip size of #20 the other has a #14 tip and an ex fast taper, Regulation Series5' 6" rods really don't have a defined taper.. I would not cut the blank you would probable

Sebastian: Been a while since I built a 80- 130- Unlimited Trolling, Try to stick with a Premium blank Cal-Star -Seeker etc. As for roller guides Aftco Big Foot HD, are the common choice, My preference was FIN-NOR , but they are no longer available. Winthrop would be my choice they are pricey. Stuart, and Pac-Bay are other options. As far as butts Aftco Unibutts, and Winthrop, ATC, and Pac-Ba

Mark: If you want to extend the blank that should not be a problem, try to get an old solid fiber glass rod and make an internal bushing at least 10" long (assuming that the the rod you are repairing is hollow) sand the bushing to fit leaving enough room for the extension bushing and the gimble. Fit a new piece of hyplon on the extension to match the butt section of the rod, with your

Ron I feel it will be a stretch to remove these items without damaging them or the blank with the heat option. If this rod was property build these parts should be nearly impossible to remove intact. If they are Aftco the items should be no problem to replace it may be a little costly, but that's what I would recommend to the owner. I have replaced these components on 50 -80 and even a cou

Mark: I have been using a Dremel cutting wheel to remove damaged reel seats and gimbles . The amount of heat needed to remove the gimble may damage the rod. Support the gimbel and carefully cut the gimble using shallow cuts once you are through insert a screw driver and spread the gimbal to remove. Did this many times without any issues. I agree with Michael, I have had my Clemens wrapper/ lathe since 1981, only had to replace the motor, and upgrade the thread carriage and rod supports. Adding additional sections is a big plus. Rich Kline Custom Rods

Phil: Back in the day I built many a trolling rod with wooden butts, used both metal and graphite gimbals, never re-call any issues with gimbal end, most issues are at the reel seat end due to the necked down area for the reel seat. Make a tight fit, line up the gimbal and reel seat use a good slow cure epoxy like Pro- Coat you should be good to go. Rich Kline Custom Rods

Scott: Billy V.s advice is right -on, why open a hornets nest. I have been using Flex -Coat finishes for ever, I found out early on that washing my hands often while doing the wrapping has eliminated most of these types of issues which I believe are thread contamination. I very rarely get "Spots" in any of my rod finishes. Rich Kline Custom Rods
