The sparkles on the St Croix (top) are caused by very the very finest glitter I could get added to the blue. Not sure i like it so have never done it again.

A heavier travel rod, 12-25# 8.5 ft Lami with feather inlays. The guides are way too beefy and heavy for my taste but then i am not paying for them!

I use medical alcohol prep wipes. They are wet until you open the small package they come in. Pretty lint free, or enough so not to cause me issues, and i get them in boxes of 500. Small so need more than 1 but that's ok. Also sort of stiff so i can cut a finer line with them when that is required. I can also cut them in strips about 2 mm wide and use them to run through the guide rings

Robert, that is exactly my experience using UV curing resins on rods. They go brittle(ones i have used). There are resins that cure with less naturally occurring wavelengths than UV. but not as inexpensive as thread. I can see manufacturing advantages using UV cures for quick drying, semi automated production and sales drivers. It is an interesting look but if you value function over looks

Do setup from face of reel going towards tip Those first three guides are critical for easy casting with a microwave setup. Then working froward I would use the same setup as for 6 ft but drop the last guide near tip as that is at around 3 inches from tip so would not be required. Of course this assumes your butt section/reel seat location is as long as the 6ft you are trying to copy. tape i

I normally stick snakes skin down with flexcoat color preserver. Then a coat or two of same over it. Then a coat of PG, Then Flexcoat color preserver for feathers over that when i do that (a small single guinea fowl inside a diamondback triangle looks good to me with Turquoise and black/silver trim). When very dry(could take some days) i hit it with PG again a few coats. I seldom do epoxy(i ha

I personally like a more moderate action on a popping rod. So maybe they/batson mean fast for a popping rod? But i like their blanks All actions and even worse their power ratings are relative to a manufacturer's marketing department. Kind of like the 1500 or 150 on the side of a truck. Not really related to much.

If you are going to cut rather than tuck( a three turn trim etc), i use a high quality( around $15 at most pharmacies) toe nail clipper. Slightly curved with a fine point and very sharp.

Do not overlook the use of a hot glue gun. I have wooden mandrels and base plates that i chuck up and use hot melt glue to hold pieces on. A good free turning tailstock and you are good to go.

The average commercial rod is used for 3 to 5 years then the latest 'shiny' comes along and everyone buys a new one. I do a lot of guide replacements on commercial rods as i live in a poor town(Memphis) where folks still repair rather than replace. I like minima 4 guides on my custom builds: cheap, very very light, good size rings and i have never had one fail and i buy them by the pack of 100.

That is sad. I brought a few over from South Africa where they were popular in the 70's and 80's until Daiwa SL's and ABU 9000's started to dominate. I get strange looks when i use one on the gulf coast but have had them for around 30 years and its still going strong. I even have one of those ugly plasticky type ones with the built in tamer loop. That one is great for casting a 1 oz pomp setup
