Thanks Paul. I am likely overly cautious about over tightening clamps and collars on graphite reel seats.

Reel seat arbors are superior to masking tape. Some reels fit some reel seat styles, sizes, and manufacturers better than others. I think the reel seat is often overlooked as a vital part of custom rod building. Reel seat size also matters for both. Nothing feels better than the perfect fitting reel seat that does not come lose and fits the hand perfect. What I have discovered, at least for

I am an United Composites fan. The United Composites CXJ 603 is a fantastic blank that I would rate 60-80 pound and has great tip action for 6-8 ounce jigs. UC rates it as a 300-500gm jigging blank, but I like 6-8 ounce much better for this blank (180-240 gram). I pair it with an old Ocea Jigger 4000P and Penn Torque LD40N 2sp. Works great with AT Titanium Turbo guides! Jigging master makes

I've made rods with and without color preserver. I am usually making offshore rods with double wrapped guides. When using CP, on the first guide wrap, I only apply CP to the part of the wrap that extends beyond the guide feet. I then apply one layer of epoxy to the first wrap. This allows the epoxy to penetrate the part of the wrap binding the guide feet. I then do my second wrap and CP the

I usually go 40-30-25-20-16-12 with runners 12 or 10 for my medium (40+ pound) or heavier offshore spinning rods. I usually use Fuji MNSGs. This has always worked for me. I am curious if others use a more rapid reduction train. I usually have size 10,000 or 20,000 reel. Size 60 or 8000 reel may work for what your friend wants and may work with your guide size, but I would think 40-25-20-16 g

I am interested in trying titanium AT Virtus or Typhoon guides for a 50-80 pound YFT popping rod. I have used Fuji MNSGs in the past with no issues but want to use titanium on the next build. I am thinking it would be best to use the heavies to avoid any frame flex. Reels will be Stella 10,000, Stella 20,000, or Van Staal VM 275 if getting pounded with spray. Rod will be United Composites 7'6

Any of your blanks suitable for big Loisianna reds using popping corks?

Yes, Dennis, that is what it is designed for. I just like it ergonomically and plan to use it for aesthetics. If I can't find one, I will just trim a slick butt I have to the length I want. The sleeves just fit perfect and are indestructible. I guess I can also trim a thinner wall polished aluminum pipe but I have to order the pipe.

I was shocked at how hard it was to find an green aftco reel seat. Found one at Donart and they were great to work with. darrel odland Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Scott, I had same issue on my last build (Sturgeon > Rod) Was told by AW that they no longer carry and > were unavailable. Looking for these I will email Mudhole to see if they plan to receive more as you can't add them to your cart. I will email aftco too as I am not sure they are still making them. I like them in front of the reel seat with a hypalon foregrip contacting the top of them. I really like grabbing a heavy roller guide, 50 narrow 2 speed rod and reel combo, at the sleeve when pulling out of rod holde

I can't find these anywhere. Anyone know where I can find one or even have one for sale? Looking for one with the 1 inch inner diameter.

Thanks Tom. I guess I read wrong, as I did a search and I thought there were some post about it offering UV protection. I know there are some liquid car waxes that offer UV protection, so I can always use that on the rods.

Search results mention it for repairing damaged epoxy. I am interested if someone used it from the initial build on top of the epoxy.

Has anyone applied a couple coats of Permagloss over the final coat of epoxy? Did it turn out nice? My thought is it would add some hardness and UV protection. Also, is today's formulation of Permagloss the same as it was 10 years ago and if not is it any safer to use? I have done searches, but only find 7-10 year old topics about it being banned soon (7-10 years ago) and it obviously is stil

Thanks everyone! I was able to order the blank through one of the forum sponsors (Anglers Workshop) who were very helpful. I am hoping the quality is as good as it was 15 years ago as I have heard mixed reviews about Seeker when compared to the old days.

I found a place that advertises a 6455 XXHB blank and I am not sure if this is the same blank. It is advertised as a white blank. I have an old (about 20 year old) Seeker black classic BSC 6455 XXH rod that I love. Its an off the shelf black blank with aftco roller guides. It is powerful and indestructible (to me) and I would like to make another one. I am not looking for the Black Steel or

Great. Thanks. Grant, I will research the Alps HXNs. They are 3x as heavy as the MXN. I know nothing about their rings, Any good links about them? Maybe I don't cast this type of set up well. I can cast most rods/reels very well, but I find it difficult to always find enough room to load and pitch a fairly stiff 8 foot rod. Also, the first rod had the stripper only 20.5 inches from the s

I'm building a 8 foot acid wrapped 50-80 pound jigging rod (UC Wahoo). I will likely use 100 pound spectra main line with 10-20 feet of 60-100 pound flouro or mono leader. Connecting knots will be PR knots, FG knot, or a windon leader. Reel will likely be Saltiga 50 (star drag) but I may switch to a newer lever drag reel with similar height but maybe slightly more narrow spool. Casting will

I usually mark the outside borders with 1/8 inch thick masking tape so I know exactly where to start and finish the wrap. Make sure the tape remains perpendicular to the rod. Double check the size with a digital caliper. I also don't like my underwraps to be too long. Remember that guides usually are not symmetric and take this into consideration if you are wrapping contrast bands in the midd

Is there a shelf life to EVA? I built 5 rods about 8 years ago and still have some EVA I would like to use. I would like to have the rods last a good 10 years after building and wonder if I should use new EVA. The EVA was stored inside the house in a closet.

I have never used this but I would think it would look real nice on a custom build. I am building an acid wrapped United Composites Wahoo 8' jigging rod and was thinking about using an abalone veneer to dress up the rod above the upper grip. Its a 50-80 pound Moderate to slow action rod blank and yes, it can definitely be bottomed out for what it will be used for. Looks easy enough to use but
