Bill taught me so much about building rods. He was so happy to teach me too, he really enjoyed it. I was blessed to live and work near his house, so it was easy to drop by.
He was so sad after his wife died. I always worried what would happen to him if his dog "Pi" was not in the picture anymore.
He will be truly missed.

I wanted to thank the folks at PacBay for the 3 Quickline blanks. I entered their drawing on facebook and they pulled my name for the blanks.
I have not gotten them yet but can't wait to build soem new rods and try them out.
Thanks again!

I got a call from someone today asking me if I could make him a 3 1/2 foot casting rod to use for fishing under bridges for crappie.
He said the longer rods are too hard to deal with under a bridge.
I have never built anything this short, but it should be no problem if I can get a blank short enough.
He wants it about medium action so it will have anough strength in case he catches a 2 or 3 po

Tom, do you still have any back issues of the 1996 prototype RodMaker issues?

Did you mix 2 batches? One for the guides and one for the buttwrap? I always mix a minimum of 3 cc's of each hardener and resin no matter how small an amount I need.
Mix up another batch and put it over the tacky layer. It should harden fine.
Don't try to mix too little an amount, it leaves too much room for error when trying to mix equal parts.

This is a great chart. I think it should be printed using the same printer you will use for your decals and that way you wil have an accurate color chart that should be reproducable on oyur printer.
Thanks for this!

I use a rubber band cut into sections and tie them on with a single knot.

As far as nubbins go, trim them off after the first thin coat of epoxy. The second coat will hide them completely and you'll never know they were there.
The epoxy offers a little more protection to the thread than cp does, so you are less likely to slice into the thread through the epoxy.

If you want to do it yourself, and do it right, buy an Alps printer and print you own water slide decals in metallic gold or silver or full 4 color prints to go on light backgrounds.
Otherwise, buy the decals from some place like Decal Connection or someone else who can make the water slides for you.

I wrapped one of those blanks with Gudebrod 468 purple and no cp, with metallic gold trim bands, and Forecast light tichrome frames and gold rings (sorry no holo on that one). It looked like a good color combo, but the wraps could have been a little better. It was an LSU theme, so it worked well. The 468 darkens a bit without cp so it almost turns a different shade of plum than the rod.

You should also try to get Billy Vivona's booklet on decorative buttwraps too.
It is in color and easy to follow.
Also, try to find a rod builder close by that you can visit (like I was fortunate enough to do).
Seeing it done does not compare to only seeing it on paper, and it will make you say "AHHH, now I understand!"

Black thread or dark thread with cp.
You should not see anything through the thread if it is dark enough.

Mix a minimum of 3 cc's of each component because that is what it takes to get a good batch every time.
I used to try to save a little by not mixing 3 of each, and some batches stayed tacky.
Since I started mixing at least 3 cc's of each, never a tacky batch since.
I would rather waste a little epoxy than all the time and effort it takes to do the job over, but practice does make perfect

Do you mean an underwrap, place the guide on top of that and then wrap over the guide feet?
Or do you mean 3 layers on top of the guide foot?
1 layer of thread on the guide foot is plenty on light tackle.

This was my first year attending the rod show in Charlotte.
My wife and 8 year old son came with me. My wife kept telling me they need one of these shows in Louisiana, where we are from, because it would fill with guests.
I explained to her that Tom hears this every year and I am kind of glad there is not one down here, because it would break me :)
I wanted to thank everyone for the good t

Yep, the store at their site shows a bunch of orange and white, and a little purple. I guess orange and white with a little purple thrown in will do it.
Thanks for the help.

22. Clemson Colors
Can someone tell me what Clemson University's colors are?
I found a post from last year that said purple, orange, and cream. The guy ordering the rod said he thought it was royal blue, not purple.
Thanks!

Thanks for all the responses. I gave him a price on a Calstar GF700H and he decided to order one from Bass Pro.
He can get one from there for much less than he can get a custom one from me. (and I don't have to worry about the warranty)

A customer wants me to build him a rod for fishing Mangrove Snapper. He says he is hard on his equipment, and he fishes shallow under oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico for these fish, and has to horse them out quickly to keep from getting broke off by the rig legs.
He gave me a Falcon 7' 20-40 LB rod to go by, but he wants it a little heavier, say 50 LBs.
He said they used to use G Loomis rods but

Mike, Bill uses Gudebrod 468 purple and Gudebrod 209 gold for the LSU colors. A nice bright green (not a lime color) can be added to those for Mardi Gras colors.
Use ncp 209 and regular nylon 468 with color preserver. The ncp gold works better than regular nylon gold even with cp on it.
Use metallic gold trim bands.
For the guide wraps, you can either use the purple with or without cp. That co
