In looking at fly rod wraps it appears that most are finished using something other than the traditional flex coat type finish. What do you use to finish fly rod wraps?

The problem with Q tips is they tend to leave fuzzies. I can't say if the carpet cleaner will have any stain affect or not being as I have never used it on thread. I would try denatured alcohol on it. It will turn everything dark but dries very fast and all of the thread will return to it's original color and does not leave any residue. As for the applicator I would roll up a white coffee filter

4. Spiral wrap
Getting ready to spiral wrap my first rod. Does anyone have a guide spacing chart for spiral wrap ( as a starting point ) or do you use the same guide spacing and just make the transition around the rod?

I just received my K Sun 360 (upgrade to 270) printer two days ago. Talked to Larry yesterday and he talked me thru that exact procedure. It is absolutely amazing what you can do with that printer. You can import graphics, fonts, clip art, logos or any thing else you want to. If you want a logo you can paste it and make it a any size you want and then the rest of your information whatever size yo

Mud Hole has pink blanks. I would call them and ask about their guarantee.

I know that Anglers Workshop and Mud Hole both have it. I would bet that other sponsors listed on the left also have it.

During the winter months when my hands get dry and crack I apply a hand lotion to my hands before I go to bed at night. When I get up the next morning I shower and that removes any residue from the lotion and in about two to three days that will allow me to wrap flake free.

As your rod is turning watch for bubbles to form. Most bubbles can be removed using heat. I have seen a cigarette lighter used, a heat gun or any other heat producing instrument. The important thing to remember is not to get real close with an open flame as you can burn the finish. I prefer to use a drinking straw to gently blow warm air directly on the bubble causing it to break and leave a very

It is a chrome, double foot, braced, wire guide with a brown insert set in a black shock ring. The information I got from the manufacture is the guide is a CHG10. The rod is a Ugly Stik Tiger, BWC/AO 2202 7'0" (2.13M) Action: Medium Heavy (30-60 Lb. Line). Email me and I can send you pictures if you want. They are not real good pictures but will give you an idea of what the guide looks li

Just to add to Wade's procedure. Buy a cheap glue gun from any craft store and lay down several beads of glue on a smooth surface. When the glue has set up slide a knife or razor blade under one and and lift the bead off. The size of the bead will be determined by the speed you move the gun. (slow move, wide bead, fast move, smaller bead) Find a piece that will fit into the tiptop tube and cut to

John,
One thing you might consider is posting where you live. If there are any rod builders in your area I am sure that someone would be willing to let you visit and show you some of their finished rods and answer any questions that you might have. Tom's book is a must have. You will refer back to it many, many times. You should go into "my control center" above and unhide your email

15. EVA grips
While reading the post below from Brad Hetzel about loose EVA grips and the solutions that each of you offered I got to thinking about bicycle grips. A number of years ago my son worked in a bicycle shop where I purchased a pair of rubber grips to put on my bicycle. The instructions that came with the grips (which I read) said to use liquid soap to install the grips on the handle bars. The soap i

Mike,
As a young person entering the workforce I was hired by a forrest products company. My job was to load finished lumber into railroad boxcars. We worked in the open air (roof overhead) with various species of wood, one being western red cedar. I soon found out that some people (I am not one) are allergic to western red cedar. Over the years I witnessed several new employees have a reaction

What size grip is on the St. Croix rod that you use?
Contact sponsors on the left and request a catalog or talk to them on the phone. Decide what size you need and go from there. As Mike said above, Tom's book is the best $15.00 investment that you can make. Bet you can't build just one!!

I know that some of the sponsors on the left carry the alcohol torch (Merrick Tackle, Angler's Workshop for sure). I assume the sponsor price would be less than your local dentist.
