Hi Bob, I too am a newbie interested in building a surf rod and yes I have Vol.18 #3 and WOW it is very informative. What is confusing the author suggests a #50 stripper but the "new concept guide system" suggests downsizing fast with a #20 or 25 stripper ??? He also suggests a tall guide system when the new guide system suggests keeping the line low to the rod, I have not approached th

Hi Mike, I too am a newbie and just as clueless about a surf rod build as you are about an ice rod build, the best advice I can offer one newbie to another is to learn every minute detail about the rod you intend to build from the butt to the very tip of the rod. Use the top of this page "FAQ,Photos,Library" if it's not there then ask this forum, there are loads of pro builders like Her

Thank you all for all the great info, OMG!! I just learned something new, I never thought there were so many other rod grips other than cork. So now i'm surfing the net for anything grip related, Came upon one builder that uses "rubber" cement to slide EVA grips onto the blank, it has opened a whole new world for my build and maybe even helps making the build easier. Thanks for all your

Thank you all, since I'm new to rod building I have no spare or broken blanks laying around, but, Quinn gave me the idea that I could wrap cork tape around a cheap reamer until I get the right dimensions then wrap sand paper around the reamer WALLA a cheap .776 reamer ! Nick R.

Hi All, I am gathering parts information for a surf rod build and a problem popped up, the surf blank that I want to build is -MHX- SU1208F 10' 2pc has a butt of .776, all the reamers for the handle only go to .52 with the exception of the ultimate reamer which is way out of my catagorey. Wonder if Herb or any other surf rod builder has a solution to what they do, worst case scenario I can alway

Hi Herb, I also thought I was all set to go for rod blank "MHX 10ft 2pc, with a Penn BTL 5000, but then I read about the small fish and wondered if I was over powering myself. Then Seth, John and David answered my question about such stout gear and why it's used. In all realiaty I should be able to use this gear in other uses so my money is not wasted, I will keep you all informed how it all

Hi All, I hope this is not off topic, I am a newbe and want to surf fish the Gulf coast in the Tampa area. When I walk the beach I notice fishermen with heavy tackle, rods of 10 to 12 feet and huge reels that could land Moby Dick.I also researched what type of fish those waters hold and found it ti be Pompano, whitting, sheephead etc, my dilima is, do I need all that large tackle? What would be a

I too have arthritis in my hands at 90, and was looking for the best way to go, I wonder if Roger would give us his expertise on the Alps with the up graded chuck, as a beginner I thought it looked good.

Thank you Herb and Tom, I really appreciate all your input which helps so very much. You are spot on Herb when you say moving to a new area is very confusing, my moves were from the mountains of NY Beaverkill brook trout to Fl. lake Okechobee large mouth bass which was not a big jump BUT surf casting was truly alien to me and my age also becomes a factor (just turned 90 sept 2018) I hope I can st

Thank You soooo much Herb for your rapid response. I have not chosen any rod wrapper yet or any other large equipment just waiting for a good tutorial that will explain what I must do. I think you are right I may be putting the cart before the horse,This forum seems to have a very large number of very good pro builders that are willing to help, I think I will concentrate on the reel and what fish

God Bless you Doug, there should be many more like you and this world would be great! Back in the 50's I was asked to vouch for a teen neighbor who was being tried for shoplifting, I pleaded my heart out for that young man to no avail, the judge gave him 18mos in juvenile detention, but what he said stayed with me since: "let the rod in the boys hand be a fishing rod". PS the boy grew up

In 1952 I had a low end fly rod with Heddon stamped on it (all I could afford at that time) I don't remember much more except it was definitely NOT a Winston or a Orvis. Nick R.

Newbie here, question#1-is there a rule on how many wraps for the ferrule end of the blank v/s the rod usage, #2- should the male end be engaged when wrapping, the blank is a 9', 4pc, 7wt glass fly rod used for largemouth bass. Nick R.

Darrel, If this is happening while you are using the motor I would check for a small short or loose wire, a very small interruption of power will make the motor think it was shut off, then it would change direction. Hope you can solve your problem, Nick R.

I'm a beginner starting my first fly rod build with low cost parts and my question is; my reel seat is an ATC AL8 that came with an aluminum tube, should a beginner build up the rod blank with masking tape to fit the reel seat tube or should I buy a reel seat insert and get some practice using a rat tail file to ream out the insert. I plan on building several more fly rods with better quality par

Mark, I'm just getting started with rod building, however, most of my knowledge with epoxy is from strip built kayaks and their glassing and epoxing of the wood. Most of the big resin companies ( West,Mas,and Raka) all suggest recoating before hard cure stage for a good chemical bond which is superior to mechanical bonding (sanding). If the finger nail can dent the coating it's ready for the seco

WOW!!! both are great answers for a newbie( just learned a good practice). There was something about the base of the blank should be inside the seat tube, but dry fitting all the parts will reveal any problems, Thanks a lot. Nick R.

Hi All, I'm a newbie ready to start my first fly rod build and have a few questions. I bought a TL Johnson 7wt 9' 4pc s glass blank (not very expensive) and a ATC-AL8 alum fly seat with the butt adapter plug and butt cap. I read somewhere but can't remember (AGE!!!) that there is a caution when installing the seat tube and adapter plug, and wonder if some of the pro's know about that caution bec

Thank you all for your rapid response, I am building this wrapper similar to the Sully but with lots of personal changes. For instance mounting and torquing the thread at different points and now with your assistance I will make the V notches movable from 3" to about 7" above the base. I will post pictures when it's all done, again thank you all. Nick R.

Hi All, I am brand new to Rod Building .org (just 15 min ago) and I am a real newbe. My first question is what is a comfortable dimension for the V-slots on the rod wrapper, or is it advisable to make the V slots adjustable. I have never used a rod wrapper and from all that I have read it is a very tedious job and I need some guidance. I do a lot of reading and watched Youtube but there was no di
