Since the solid glass rainshadow .385"x.105"x72"-GB is so popular for ice rods I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for the guide spacing. This is my first build on that blank. Thank you for your help.

Since this is on the same subject of a spinnerbait (3/8 oz) rod blank, would anyone recommend a 7' to 7'-8" blank? Edit: I was thinking of using the Elliot E-C73MH-F blank.

I was thinking about doing this and like the idea of using foam in the center to help keep the weight down.  How well does the foam core, wood shell transfer vibrations?

These rods will be used in -25 degrees like last weekend. I am just afraid of the paint cracking and staying flexible in the cold.

I see that mud hole used to offer some spray can paint but they no longer do. I am sure there is a reason for that

I've have been reviewing all the different threads about painting rod blanks. But my problem is I don't have a spray gun. Is there an option out there for a spray can paint that works well for painting rod blanks? I'm trying to make a brightly colored rod tips to see the action on a fiberglass blank.

You would not have happened to have made something similar for open water blanks? The ice fishing one has been a great help. It has also save me a lot of money from buying each blank to figure this out. Thank you, thank you.

How fast of a taper can I do within so many inches before it becomes too much stress on the blank where it gets to its backbone and breaks the tip-off?

Thank you so much for that information Rodger. I will proceed with caution. I assumed that much and that's why I bought three blanks to play with.

Is there any kind of guide to use for solid glass blank and mm thickness for action? Since this is a ice rod I don't have to worry about casting and the effect the sanding would cause to the blank.

So I have spent some time reviewing all the threads I can find on this site and others about sanding down blanks. I understand the health concerns and I am set up and prepared for this. I also spent a lot of time at the stores playing with different rods the last week and seeing how they react when you put a load on the tip. It appears to me that most rod tips don't really start bending until

Thank you for your insight Paul. I live in MN is there a way I can get my hands on some of these blanks to see them in person before I buy one?

Spencer Phipps recommend a Batson Rainshadow SWS597 in that post. At 7'-10" the blank is a little shorter than what I was looking for. But I can learn to extend the butt of the blank. The only problem I have with this blank is that it is parabolic. I have read on other forms that this would not be their first choice in a blank. But they didn't say what one would be.

I am looking for a suggestion on a blank to use to make an open water sturgeon rod.  The rod I have right now works but I need another one for a guest, my wife, or upgrade for myself.  What I am using right now is the rod I had built many years ago from Thorne Brothers for trolling for muskies.  It is similar to the glass trolling blank that ST. Croix made for e-glass series catfish rod (disconti

Thank you for the great tip Roger. That blanks looks like it will work well for what I am doing. Since I may sometimes use this rod outside would you go with the size 10 tip that I read was suggested in a different post?

I have spent more time looking at this site than my wife in the last 3 months.  I have my rod wrapper built (thank you for all the great ideas) and ready to start ordering parts to make my first rod.  For my first rod I would like to make a Sturgeon Ice Rod.  Since I will be using this rod in a portable house and room will be tight I think I will build it to around 42” with a bait caster reel sea
