Since switching to braid on my drum spinning reels, the "trigger" has probably saved my finger from shreading., I suggest you try tape or zip ties til you determine where and if you like it. it's you rod, so treat it like its yours and enjoy using it. Tight Lines and Fresh Bait

I build alot of surf rods each year. I used the larger gathering guides as that was all I had ever been taught. The guys from Fuji at the ICRBE finally got me to tape on "New Concept" guides and spacing. Who said you couldn't teach an old dog new tricks. Tape on some guides, head out to the a field and see for yourself. That is alot of the fun of building custom rods. Learning somethin

I have been building surf rods since 1977.. I built 3 11' 9" 2 to 6 oz Rainshadow this week. This is a great all around blank. It is alot like Breakaway 1418 blanks of years ago. St.Croix, Tommy Farmer, CTS, Rod Geeks, MHX, Batson-Rainshadow , etc. There are alot of great blanks out there. It depends on the reel and what you are targeting. "Gen 2" rods are around so you can t

I put one coat of flex coat under my decal, allowing 24 hours to fully cure, then the decal-peel and stick. I wonder how the CP will behave ontop of this?

I have been putting decals on for years and have only had problems with one rod company's decals . His decals seem to partially float up thru the finish. I complained and they now send 2 decals with all blanks, which have to be on the rod for warranty work. I have cleaned the blank with rubbing alcohol, with a coat of dry flex coat applied first , apply decal, heat 10-15 seconds with heated hair

I had a friend bring his factory and some custom rods from the Outer Banks that had developed foggyness under the finish on top of the wraps. It was slightly white. We used a hair dryer to cook out the moisture. He had hauled his rods on a roof rack for 800 miles in changing wind , rain and temperature. What is the long term remedy? Some were 13 feet long, so hauling inside is out of the quest

Thanks to all. I think I have paid my dues as I have been handwrapping ALL my rods since 1977. Just wanted to try a electric wrapper as age has worked on my fingers and joints. "tight string and smooth finish to all". Gary Michael

I just inherited an older Pac Bay power wrapper with 8' bed that I updated with Alps newest chuck. That problem I have on the older wrapper is the older dryer motor seems to run one direction and when a little pressure is applied it will go the other direction or back and forth as pressure is applied. I have always used a BBQ motor for drying and never ran into this. I guess I need a new dr

I am currently using BK guides and New Concept spacing on ALL the surf rods I build. The smallest that I use on drum rods in an #8. The reason I haven,t switched to #6 or smaller is, think about the shock knot, a small amount of grass and fishing 3 people deep on Cape Point. You are trying to wind in your line with grass or even after your get the debris off the shock knot with just a small amou

These spots are fresh water spots from rain while on vacation as these rods were stored on 2nd floor deck away from prying eyes.

Recently returned from surf fishing trip, caught in rain storm several times during two weeks and now water spots on blanks. I gave the rods a good scrubbing with fiber brush and mild dish detergent, spots still there. I tried Gel-Gloss polish/cleaner to no joy. It has always worked in the past. The spots will scratch off with the fingernail. but that is alot of rod to scratch. Harnell, Lamigla

As usual. a GREAT SHOW. I am so lucky to live just 30 minutes away. The guys in all the booths were answering questions for anyone that stopped by. Whether it was guide placement at Fuji or blanks from Rod Geeks, or Batson , guides for sale at Get Bit and supplies at Mudhole. I think I might be able to throw "Bait and eight" alot farther now that Tommy Farmer set me straight. Get the

I build alot of RodGeeks 100mmf2 and fish with them alot in the surf throwing hopkins or cut bait. These blanks were supposedly built on old St Croix mandrals from the days of the Ben Doerr series. I really like this series blanks.

I transport my surf rods to the coast in two pocket chamios bags in the camper topper. This protects against rubbing and chaffing. I have seen people running 75 mph on the way home with their rods still in the cooler racks, with rigs still attached. road dust and grime driven by high speeed gets inside those expensive reels that we only wish we could by "on sale"

I am rebuilding a G.Loomis surf rod and need to repaint the blank with flat black paint to cover up original paint scratches. I want to cover this paint with U-40 perma gloss. I tried Krylon on an old blank, let dry 24 hrs, then applied U-40, but the paint then dissolved and rubbed off. Any ideas on which paint to use?
