Thank you all for the suggestions and clarification on the different styles of blanks. I am leaning toward the NFC FW 702-2(IM), Rod Geeks C266MLF2 6'6", or MHX SJ842-2. I would love to build on a CTS blank but unfortunately in this case it is a little out of the customer's budget. Maybe for my next personal build. Thanks all.

I checked out the Rainshadow recommendations and they are close but still nothing that fits exactly what I'm looking for. As far as SJ, DS, etc, aren't these just marketing terms to kind of steer customers in a direction? This rod will be an all purpose, probably used for several fishing types and techniques, not one specifically. Any other recommendations that are similar? TIA

Hi, I am looking for recommendations on a blank to make into a spinning rod mainly for tossing soft plastics. Looking for a 2-piece, MF, L, around 6'6" plus or minus a few inches. What are your favorites?

Dave, I would suggest applying a few drops of isopropyl alcohol to the guide wrap and see if you like the way it looks. This will give a very close representation of what the finished wrap will look like. If you are happy with the results, let it dry thoroughly and apply finish.

I like the recycling idea. Unfortunately, where I live they don't have the same recycling capabilities as a lot of other areas. They only accept type 1&2 plastics and the grocery stores only accept the colored grocery type sacks. I do like the idea of putting the stripped parts from repairs in them. I've thought about using them for the random nuts and bolts laying around that don't get thei

What immediately comes to mind is small boxes (biodegradable) or all in a single bag or box with labels or tags tied on each component. Or a box with dividers, or maybe even small paper bags or envelopes. Sometimes ordering components for a full rod leads to 10-12 small plastic bags and often times with reel seats each each part of the seat will come in a bag and then all the part bags are in a l

I'm curious as to what everyone does with all of those little zip top bags rod components come in. I have a giant bag full of little bags but for some reason don't want to throw them out. Also, if we as rod builders and consumers started pushing for it collectively could we change the system and start to get the suppliers to use more sustainable packaging options? Myself, and I'm sure many of

Thank you both. On a tip-over type I usually wrap/reinforce the female end anyway mostly because I like the way it looks. I had read that the female side of a spigot needed to be reinforced for the entire length of the spigot which seems excessive. I think I will shoot for my standard 3/8"-1/2" inch or so wrap and stop it as close to the end as I can and still allow for thread finish.

I am building a 7'6" 3wt fiberglass fly rod that has spigot ferrules. I have found a lot of mixed reviews on reinforcing wraps on the blank at the ferrules. Does the female end need reinforcement and if so how long should it be? (The entire length of the male portion?) Does the male end need reinforcement and how long should that be as well? On this blank the spigot is approximately 2.5 inch

Mark, The reason for wanting to remove the arbor is two-fold. It would make the rod much lighter (albeit shorter and change the action/power some) and boring that size hole in a new grip would be difficult. The walls of the new grip would be very thin after boring a hole that large, and I don't have a lathe so trying to do that by hand would be quite tricky. Another thought I had was to cut par

I am in the process of restoring a bamboo fly rod. The restoration is my first time working with bamboo although I have built several other rods. The rod is an early 50' vintage, Japanese made, production rod (I know, not worth the cost or effort, tomato stake, etc, etc,) 8' and probably around a 6wt. I removed the grip and the reel seat and underneath is a continuous wooden arbor about 10"

Thank you Spencer, that clears up a lot. I've only ever built fly rods so this project is definitely a learning experience.

I am refurbishing a med/heavy spinning rod from the late 60's or early 70's. All the guides have been cut off except for the tip-top. Some of the wrapping remains for each guide that is missing so I know there were only 4 guides plus tip which is a size 6. My question is how many running guides should I use or alternately which guide should be the choker guide? The rod was custom made so I am pla

Thank you so much for the help! Now I need to know what size guides to use on this, and if the guide style or materials have changed much since then? I want to stay as close to the original as possible. Thanks, -A

I recently acquired an old rod that I want to re-do. All of the guides except the tip top have been cut off. I cannot find much information at all about this rod and was hoping someone on here knew something about it. All I've found is that it was likely made in the late 60's or early 70's. It's a one piece fiberglass blank. It has a large, long maple handle with the reel seat in the middle. I ne
