I'm going to build my first spiral wrap rod, a 6' boat rod. I plan on using a Penn Jigmaster reel on it. How far forward of the reel should the butt guide be? Should the 90 degree guide be on the same side as the handle or opposite? I plan on a size 12 butt guide with size 8 guides the rest of the way out. Does this sound reasonable? The rod will be used for summer flounder, mackerel, and bluefis

Thanks Bob,
I hadn't thought about doing a spiral wrap of the guides as I've never built a rod for a conventional reel before. Your step by step description is excellent and I really appreciate you taking the time to write it up. I've decided that is the way I'm going to build it.

I've decided to build a conventional boat rod for salt water bottom fishing. I have a 6' blank that I feel will do well for this purpose. Will use a Penn Jigmaster reel on it. The handle and reel seat will deduct 16" from the total length of the blank. I need suggestions on guide sizing and spacing.
Thanks in advance.

I decided to try Classic Rod Coat. Does anyone have experience with it? How soon can I put a second coat on the wraps?

I'm building a couple of conventional bottom fishing rods using 6 foot Rainshadow RCKJB600-112 blanks. They will have Penn Jigmaster Reels. I'm looking for guide recommendations as well as guide spacing recommendations.
Thanks in advance.

I'm planning on building several boat rods for bay/inshore bottom fishing (flounder, sea bass, cobia, etc.). Would prefer to build as spinning rods. Anyone have suggestions as to a decent blank to use?

That 1968 Star was finished with rod varnish, not urethane or epoxy. I concur with Roger, if you want something other than the dull graphite or glass, just put some wax on the blank.

Wow..... that would be like the basket weaving courses they used to have 40+ years ago. Totally non-credit.

I totally agree, Tom. The precision of properly used syringes can't be matched.

I have the same wrapper and have noticed the same thing, there's no smooth progression. I'd love to find a way to do it.

I've never built a baitcasting rod so I'm looking to the more experienced builders for some guidance. The rod blank is a SJ783-2-MHX, 6'6", 2 piece and I'm in need of guide make, size, and placement info. Was thinking of using Kigan guides, what are your opinions?

I have an older American Tackle rod wrapper/dryer that needs a new drive belt that is approximately 4 1/2" in diameter. I've tried ordering the part from various sources. They only list a "large O ring" which is roughly half the size of the part I'm looking for. Can someone tell me what the correct part name is and a source?
Thanks in advance.
