Hmmm, I’ve been out of the loop for awhile. Is this Crystal Coat related to the Crystal Coat that was once sold by Dale Clemens?

I built a 5-piece 7-foot fly rod. The sections are only 17” long. I’ve been so far unsuccessful in finding tube that is not way too big for the rod. Any suggestions?

Most of the other epoxy finishes seemed to be designed as “one-and-done” finishes, possibly to expedite manufacturing. I like to apply multiple thin coats. With Hobby Poxy, I’d get a look similar to varnish. I don’t believe Hobby Poxy is available anymore. Plus, I like working with varnish, and any rework is definitely easier.

Agreed. That is more or less what I ended up doing. It was not fun. One of the reasons why I’ve gone back to varnish on rods that I.build for myself.

I use and build glass rods quite a bit. For me, it’s all about feel. Playing a fish on a glass rod feels better than graphite or even bamboo. I have 6 and 7 weight glass fly rods that I use on bluegills with no apologies. Some modern glass fly blanks are so stiff that they seem like graphite in disguise. I have some graphite fly rods that feel great as well, but they are the exception, not t

I use a formula for guide placement, but I set the stripper guide placement (butt to guide) based on another similar rod that I own and already like.

It’s mainly personal preference, but anything excessive does more harm than good. I typically go with 1/8” or so, maybe 1/4” on a large saltwater rod.

I’m rewrapping an old surf rod for which I had coated the wraps with Clemens Crystal Coat, aka HobbyPoxy. I slogged through removing the guide wraps, but the diamond wrap has been particularly annoying. Any ideas about dissolving the epoxy to make my life easier?

10. Re: Thread ??
Thanks much for all the answers so far. I should point out that I don’t generally use NCP thread, metallic thread, or variegated thread, so just looking for something equivalent to the Gudebrod solid colors.

11. Thread ??
I’ve been out of the loop for a couple of years and haven’t had to buy any thread in the post-Gudebrod era. So, what’s the general consensus on what’s a good substitute?

Thanks. I’m more of a traditionalist, but I’d like to take a look at those anyway. Who makes them?

Can anyone suggest a source for aluminum fly rod tubes? Something other than the usual black crinkle finish or brushed aluminum finish that you commonly find.

14. Re: cork or eva
I like cork. You couldn't give me a rod made with foam, I'd give it right back. No actually, I might destroy it. For me cork, or wood in some cases, is the ideal material for rod handles. Case closed.

Other than Lamiglas, is anyone currently making fiberglass one-piece surf blanks?

Anyone have a source for wooden rod handles and foregrips such as were common on boat/pier rods in the 1960's or thereabouts? I'm sure there must be boxes of these laying around somewhere,.

Mike,
It's a term that's used in saltwater environments to describe a rod intended for revolving spool reels (not counting fly reels). What you might call a &qu

Thanks guys. Seems like there's a few options out there. By the way, to clarify, I'm building a conventional rod, not spinning.

Whenever I'm on a vacation trip I'll usually bring along a couple of multi-piece rods that will fit in a suitcase or duffel bag. Usually a light/medium spinning rod and an 8-wt fly rod. I sometimes have an opportunity to do some pier or dock fishing but my regular travel spinning rod is too light for any serious bottom fishing. What I need is a conventional rod in a multi-piece configuration

Hmmm, I always heard it was a product called Hobby Poxy, which is also no longer available. In fact, I bought a quantity of Hobby Poxy when the Clemens stuff dissappeared. I'm pretty sure it's the same product.

Chris,
I'm not too familiar with the surf conditions in New Jersey, but here on the Long Island south shore I find that tackle as light as you can get away with is the best for Kingfish. I often use a one-handed baitcasting rod that comfortably casts 1 to 1 1/2 oz. This is perfect for Kingfish. Other times I will use a 3 oz bank sinker on a 9' light surf spinning rod. Both rods are fiber

As some others have suggested, I would use some shade of blue for the main wrap color. Then I would add very narrow trim bands of white thread.

I think the problem you're faced with is that you have someone that was raised on graphite and is looking for a glass rod of similar dimensions and line weight. During the glory days of glass, 8' 4-weight rods were not very common, if they existed at all. I'm sure you will find some per the suggestions above, but recognize that they are not going to be common in that configuration. The progres

I'm afraid I don't understand what a hook keeper has to do with whether or not you have a carbon fiber grip. Can you please explain?

Any numbering on them? Will need a better description to help you out. Horrocks Ibbotson was not known has a high end manufacturer. That doesn't mean you can't turn one of their blanks into a great rod. They made a lot of solid glass rods too. I wouldn't bother building a rod from a solid glass blank.

The one I have is Cen-Tech model 93543, which has a capacity of 500 grams and a readability of 0.1 grams.

Ditto on the Cen-Tech scale from Harbor Freight. I ended up getting two of them. A neat little scale. Around $10 when it's on sale.
