Thanks for your advice on my project. I got the idea for a 7'6" casting rod for steelhead from a friend that had a G-Loomis IMX rod in that length that he really liked. Unfortunately all of his fishing tackle and his house were lost in the fires that ravaged the Coffey Park area here in Santa Rosa. I gave him a few rods that I had built plus some reels that were in good shape so he could

Norm For lack of any other reason to use the size 5's was that the 5.5's were out of stock. As it turns out I ordered 3 of the KB 5's and one was on back order anyway. Looks as it I out smarted myself. Mudhole has always been a great source for Fuji titanium guides so as slow as I go I'm sure it will show up before I need it. Thanks for the feedback. Lynn

Thanks Michael, I had wondered if the RV was to be put on backwards because of the description of "reverse". I am looking forward to trying this guide setup as it is new to me. Always interested in trying something new and different. Kind of like the first time I used a size 5 guide on a fly rod and thought it looked so small, but it worked and I couldn't of been happier. Thanks fo

Spencer, I want to use the High Modulus HM-P904-MHX.. I know it isn't necessarily a Steelhead blank but I like that type of action because of the extra fast tip and the rigid butt. Would be interested in your thoughts though. Thanks. Lynn

Thanks Norman, that RV6 sounds pretty interesting with the KW6 transition guide. I don't think I want to go smaller than the KB/KT 5 runners but the combination using the RV and the KW sounds pretty intriguing. Now off to Mudhole.... Thanks a bunch, Lynn

I want to build a 7'6" steelhead casting rod and use the Fuji KW series guides. My first thoughts are to use a 12, then an 8, then the KB series in size 5 and then the KT series also in size 5. The blank will be a MHX HM904. Does this seem reasonable? I am trying to keep this as light as is possible. Any and all opinions from those that have used these guides before will be appreciated.

I offered to build a guy a 6wt fly rod for $60 because the guy didn't have much money. I told him that the cost of the parts, not including labor, was more than $60 and sure enough he wanted a warranty. He didn't seem to care that I was losing money to build the rod in the first place or that I was trying to do him a favor. Like Tom said, wrong demographics. This kind of a person doesn't need

What sometimes slows the response from a site is your browser. Internet Explorer got painfully slow so I tried Google Chrome. Much faster but if there is high traffic on the Internet it will be slower as well. I have had much better luck with Chrome and its free so it might be worth a try.

Electric Eels! I get it. Use copper wire and power your trolling motor. You guys who fish the Great Lakes think of everything. Thanks for the reply and the laugh.

What fishing application would use copper wire?

Don, Thanks for the reply. I have three rods with MicroWave's, two casting and one spinning. I just haven't been able to get out on the water to try them while actually fishing. When you made the statement "If you are not using the MicroWave Guide Train on your rods, you are about to be passed by the fishing rod industry" it just sounded like you were making a challenge or a boast

Don, Are you making a challenge to Custom Rod Builders? I haven't fished with the Micro Wave system yet and while I'm sure it will work, I'm not sure if it is actually better than the 27x system that I have been using. Has an objective comparison actually been done or is this marketing?

If your measurements are correct for this rod then the face of your reel is roughly a foot and a half from the end of the butt. I think the length of the butt is a little long for the length of the blank which moves the reel closer to the tip. Just a thought.

The cheapest way to ship to Canada is USPS Priority Mail. Both UPS and Fedex go through agents who add their fees on top of the shipping costs. If I remember right, I shipped around three-hundred dollars worth of blanks and the cost, including insurance, was less than thirty dollars. I only charged actual charges which also kept the charges down but you can't expect everyone to do that. It wa

Since the casting setup doesn't seem as critical as the spinning, and static placement will give me the right guide placement, then I will just do it the way I have in the past using static placement . No offense to American Tackle, but when I looked at their chart that came with the sets a couple of the distances just seemed strange on both rods, which made me skeptical. Thank you for the fee

I purchased two sets of the MicroWave/TidalWave casting guides for a 6'6" and a 7' casting rod. The running guide placement isn't a problem but the placement of the two transition guides, and choker, is something new to me. My question concerns the distance between the reel and the first and second guides. Does this system need a specific spacing to make it work properly or should it be t

Mo, One thing I think your going to find is that the largest number of 7' blanks available are generally going to be rated for 1/16th oz. or heavier lures and 4-6 lb. test or heavier line weights which would make casting those tiny lures more difficult when considering what the blank is actually rated for. On the other hand there are quite a few 5'6" or 6' blanks available that are rated

I don't think that any warranty applies to "perceived" flaws that "might" show up after a period of time. He bought something and he is dissatisfied with it and that's the bottom line. The dealer should replace it or offer to refund his money. I fail to see how you can tell the manufacturer that you want his product replaced before you actually use it because you feel like

Hey Lou, Batson has a 10wt and a 12wt in their RX7 line and a 10wt in their RX8 line. I really like these two lines of blanks as I think they give you a lot of bang for the buck.

Dave, Really like the way you designed your thread tensioner. Did you use part of the tip section of a blank or something else? Nice job on your design, looks very functional. Lynn

Dave, This is Batson's recommendation for guide size and spacing on that model: F763-2 Dark Blue Gloss 7'6" 2 4.5"---9.5"---15.5"---22.5"--30.5"--39.5"-49.5"--61.5" 3 (sf)-3 (sf)- 3 (sf)---3 (sf)--4 (sf-)-4 (sf)-4 (sf)-12 (ud) Hope this helps! Lynn Double LL Fly Rods

I think that when we all start building rods we just assemble them and aren't really building a "custom" rod. Once bitten by the rod building bug though, the details become more and more important. The materials and the methods we use to construct rods becomes more diverse and the quality of the finished product becomes much better in both form and function. When you add things like

Derek, Plumbing parts! Sounds like I wouldn't want to miss this meeting for anything. No web site design but lots of installing operating systems. Just don't ask me to fix your old computer with DOS 3.3 on it as I wouldn't want to have to go through that again. LOL Lynn

Might be some timing problem with the Internet but it works for me and others have also been able to access the site. I've built several hundred computers and installed thousands of software programs over the years and I've come to the conclusion that you should always expect the un-expected when it comes to computers and software.
