Thanks everyone for the tips. I ended up shaving down the core grip so I could spin the nut further so I could slide the reel foot in.

I have run into a small problem with my reel seat. The hood hits the fore grip and wont open long enough to get the reel in the seat. When I test fit things I was able to get the reel in the seat. I am thinking the way to fix it is to put the rod in lathe and trim the fore grip down to match the threads on the reel seat. I only need an eighth of an inch to make things fit. Has anyone ever do

Hi guys my cousins want me to build their dad a lake trout rod for his retirement. They plan on surprising him with it. I have never built a big lake trout rod and I cant ask him since its a surprise. So I need a little education on lake trout rods so I can build one that he will be happy with. Any blank suggestions to guide sizes would be great.

I picked up a cheep laser engraver on @#$%&. Plug it into the computer and burn your image on your handle. You can do letters too. Just make sure you have some spare handles around to test on.

Hi guys I just wanted to give an update on this. I tried out the Pro Coat high build on a couple ice rods today. I heated up the bottles in a bowl of hot water for about 5 to ten minutes I then put equal parts in my mix cup. The finish went on a lot better that the last time I tried using it. I think this will work great for my ice rods I am doing.

I decided to try the UV Flex Coat. I put my primer coat on about an hour ago and plan to put the 2nd coat on in a few hours. Its 70 degrees and 60% humidity in my basement so things are going a little slow but it will be about four hours between coats. On the Flex coat video it was two and a half hours between but I figured id wait just a little longer with the cool temp and the humidity so hi

I am not opposed to painting the areas where the guides are going white or the guide foot white either. With the no cp thread will the white darken a little or will it be just like it looks on the spool? I paint cars for a living so sometimes I see things that others don't. I just don't want to have to do the rod over for something I could have fixed from the start. I am a little nervous

Hi guys I am building a 2nd rod for a customer. I made him a MN Vikings inspired rod for his first one. It was a white blank with purple wraps that was easy dark color over light blank. For this one I painted the blank flat purple. He wants the guides wrapped with white thread. I didn't like the idea of doing white over purple but that's how he wanted it so I figured id give it a try. I have tw

Hi guys, I have been wanting to try Flex Coat for awhile now but I am not sure if I need the High Build or the Lite build. I have been using Pro Coat original and I like it but was just wanting to try something else. Also what is the working time with the Flex Coat? I know with the Pro Coat I have a long time to work with it around 45 to an hour before it gets thick. Any tips would be great.

Hi guys I was wondering if anyone knew how long the open time was on the pro coat high build. I wanted to try it for a rod I was working on. First thing I noticed is that It was definatly thicker but it is high build. 2nd I seen a lot of bubbles in the syringe when i pulled it out of the bottle. When i mixed it, the bubbles got worse and it almost looked like the Pro Glue not wrap epoxy. I put

3M makes a 3000 grit and 5000 grit sand paper for the automotive industry. You may be able to try using this on your epoxy after its dried. Just remember to use it wet. I may have to try this on a test piece. When I use it on clear coat on a car it dulls the finish but you don't see the scratches.

I had to order a few more winding checks from mud hole so I hope I get them before next weekend so in can glue this up. I noticed in the video that he didn't put any epoxy on the outside of the arbor, I plan on putting some on the outside so I know that there is a layer of it between the reel seat and the arbor. I'm using the Fuji SKTPSM Split Casting Reel Seat on this rod.

Has anyone tried these yet? I have some and I was thinking of using them on my next build. I have everything fit and sized up but was wondering how I should epoxy them on. I was thinking of epoxying them on the blank in place first then after the epoxy dries put the reel seats on. I thought I would check here first to see if anyone has used them.

Hi guys I am going to build my first spiral wrapped rod, how do I pick which guides to use. I was thinking of getting this kit will this kit work? I was also wondering how do I go about laying out the guides for starting the spiral? I know I will have to static test to place the rest of the guides. Thanks for the help.

Thanks for all of the reply's guys, Now my question is which guides do I get for this build? I am planning on a seven foot rod and was thinking of getting this Fuji kit from Mud Hole but I am not sure there are enough double foot guides to get me through the spiral. What are you guys using for guides on a spiral wrap? Justin

A lot of great information, Thanks guys. I am planning on using this rod for walleyes using bottom bouncers with spinners. I have 2 bait casters that i use just for bottom bouncers, I havent had any luck casting with them so i use a spinning rod for casting.

Hi guys. I am getting ready to start a new build for myself. I was thinking about doing a spiral wrap on a rod, I kind of understand the concept a little. My question is what is the advantage of a spiral wrap vs just making a spinning rod. Any advice or input on making a spiral would be greatly appreciated so I can gain more information on this type of build. Thanks Jusitn

Thanks for the response you guys. Doug I was thinking about cutting it down to 7 foot. 8 foot is too big for my boat. I thought about doing a spiral wrap but I was wanting to try it out on a cheeper rod. I might consider doing a spiral but I will have to do some more research on it. Do you have any pictures of yours? I was thinking of using Winn grips for this but all I can find is split gri
