The following cut/paste was posted by Thomas Thornhill in another thread, and I’m pretty sure he meant to put it here: “I've been working for over thirty years as an outwrapper. I've been working for over thirty years as an outwrapper. I have wrapped rods for Loomis, Lamiglas, Sage, Winston, Cabela's, Penn, Sage and many more throughout the years and all of them built on the straightest axis. For the most part when the average person buys a rod they do two things they shake the rod to see how it feels and they look down the rod to see how straight it is. If it is crooked

I print out what I want in different sizes on my printer. I then cut them out and see how they look on the blank, that way you can see what fits before you order a decal.

Prowrap claims the metalic twist has strong tensile strength so should be fine, besides I don't think a 3 oz. fish is going to pull that hard.

Most rod companies use outwrappers, I've been outwrapping for a lot of years and different companies have different standards, but they all have the same problem, it's hard to get quality workers to work for the low pay. It's piece work, the faster you wrap the more money you make. When you are starting out it is hard to even make minimun wage and once you get good it's still low pay. High qualit

Sean I outwrap for C.F. Burkheimer Rods in Washougal, Washington. They make a lot of spey rods and single handed rods. Every single rod I have wrapped for them has been with size A thread, it's more than strong enough for anything a fly rod can handle. I've even wrapped salt water rods with roller guides and surf rods with size A thread and it works OK, just doesn't have the abrasion resistanc

The average person buying a fishing rod has never heard anything about spine. They go into a store and look at a rack of maybe ten rods that are all the same. Then pick one up shake it up and down to see if they like how it feels then site down the rod. If the rod doesn't look straight it goes back on the rack and they pick up the next rod shake it and if it's straight that's the one they want. I

About fifteen years or so ago I wrapped for a company that assembled some Fly Logic rods. The blanks at that time were subcontracted out to Loomis and we made the rods. I still have my card that tells me how to wrap their rods. Thomas F. Thornhill

Roger How many rods I do an hour depends on how many tie offs there are. Over the years I've slowed down to about 60 tie offs and hour. That would be 15 double foot guides with trim wraps. On my best day I wrapped 120 ultra lite Loomis rods in 10 hours, I only took a couple of 15 minute breaks. Now most of the rods I do are spey rods and the average rod has 61 to 64 tie offs and takes me about

I've never used a straw or a toothpick. I just tape my pull through down make my trim wrap and pull the tag end. I'm an outwrapper and have to be fast. Trim wraps go faster than a guide wrap and pays the same to I love doing trim wraps.

Brendan I would suggest that you contact Billy Vivona of the NERBS and see if you could possibly attend one of his meetings.

I would think that line running inside the blank with the ridges would be a great place for ice to form. I know how much fun ice can be when winter steelhead fishing with regular gear.

Sam I've been an outwrapper for many years for a few different companies and I have put guides right on the end of a ferrule many times. A lot of the spey rods I wrap have the stripper guide on the end of a ferrule and there have been no problems.

The simplest way to customize a rod for a customer is to put his or her name on it. The name on the rod really makes it their rod.

Joe I have been an outwrapper for a lot of years. My wrapper uses a 5000 rpm motor with the chuck attached directly to the motor and it has v blocks. When I wrap I use a bobbin and keep my left hand on the blank when it's spinning. This is the standard outwrapper setup. The fancy wrappers with all the bells and whistles are nice but they tend to slow you down, outwrapping is all about speed.

I've been outwrapping for over twenty years and I have wrapped rods for Loomis , Lamiglas, Sage, Burkheimer and many other companies when I wrapped for Ordella and D&E Rods. All of the companies I wrapped for used Gudebrod, it was the standard of the industry.

While split reel seats are great they are not designed to be use with an insert. That is why I'm looking for a skeletal reel seat.

Thanks for the replies. I have a piece of wood for the insert. I am looking for a skeletal seat painted white to use with the wood. I've looked through the list on the left and have had no luck.

The smaller diameter blank probably has a greater wall thickness or different modulus material used. Wall thickness, diameter and modulus of material used to make blank determine power.

Roger When I got the rods the they had the tip tops on and were marked with a china marker where the guides went. I taped the quides on wrapped them and aligned them then they went into the factory for finish. One company had me doing crosswraps on all their rods and I also got very fast at doing simple chevrons. Les The ICRBE is on the wrong side of the country for me. I love outwrapp

A lot of the rods built in the U.S. are wrapped by people like me. I have been outwrapping for about twenty years. Most of the outwrappers I have seen put the 4 oz. spool on the floor in front of them and run the thread through their fingers. Most of the power wrappers we use have the chuck connected directly to the motor shaft, no pulleys. When most people see me wrap they are amazed at how fast
