All of my favorite rods are NFC, and their value is simply outstanding. When you call, you talk to a guy who knows everything about the business and can give you details beyond belief. Oftentimes, they need to get a minimum order quantity to make a production run, but man, they tell you in advance that it's going to be a wait. That's what you get when you get what you want. If you know about it i

I think we may be talking about different things, or calling the same thing by a different name. The

Lol, that sounds like something I would do. But in this case, the grip has an EVA butt cap sized to fit into the "non-tenon" end of the tube, and I've read that the tenon is recent addition - it's essentially an arbor that's been glued in with a half inch hanging. A casting reel seat fits perfectly on top of it, so if you're building a casting rod, then Bob's your uncle. Nice and snug.

I'm hoping to incorporate one of the EFX soft touch 9.5" full length grips into a light spinning rod assembly (I'm not good enough to qualify as a rod "builder" lol), and wondered if anyone has come up with decent trim pieces/reel seat combo to bridge the tenon, which is cut to fit a casting reel seat? I believe that I can use an AT Aero 17 without trim rings (please correct me if

Guess that's how I'm going to do it, then. Nothing like empirical determination :).

Hey Roger, yeah...I know...but my buddy insists on titanium. So titanium it is. And he wants doubles for the first two. I'm using singles for the remainder though. I've built a bunch of rods using KL-H and I love them, and this rod will have KL runners.
So...given these constraints...and thoughts on a size 25 versus size 30 stripping guide?

It's likely to be a Shimano 4000 spool size, perhaps a Stradic, with 25 lb braid? I'm not sure my buddy has figured it out completely, which makes placement a bit tougher. Size-wise, however, is in the ballpark.

Yes, I'm talking spinning guides. I looked at their blueprint and they recommend a size 30. However, this build will be used primarily with braided line. I suspect that the #25 guide will work okay, but I'm hoping someone on here has built with the double foot guides as a stripper and can comment directly. Thanks.

Holy cow, is titanium expensive!!! I'm using Fuji TKWAG double foot for the first three guides, then titanium single foot runners to the tip. The main application is going to be jigging, in a private boat, off Boston for black sea bass and the like. I'd planned to start with a size 25 TKWAG stripping guide and work through a 16 to an 8, then go with 7s for runners. My concern is that the size 25

As blanks get lighter and materials change, these considerations become more important and likely necessary when pushing the limits. Sure, they won't always apply, particularly for older or mid-range blanks I'd guess. But it seems prudent to trust the advice of a guy who designs (and breaks) these things himself.

Hi John
I have a good friend who fishes the same technique on Erie regularly. His go-to rod now is an MHX S721-2. I thought that it would be too light to haul doubles over the gunnel, but he says it's fine so long as you don't high stick. In general, the weight is resting on the bottom, so sensitivity is the key. I think he uses six lb test and a fluoro leader with spinshot double rigs. Not a

14. Re: Kayaks
I'm no expert on kayak fishing, but I know that I also get the butt caught on my clothes more from a kayak than a bass boat. For me, it's simply a matter of trying to cast in a non optimal direction, like quartering behind. Sometimes the wind plays tricks on you. It's tough to flip from a kayak, too. Bottom line here is that it's technique dictated by circumstances rather than an inherent issue w

Guys,
How important is it that the last coat of finish over the bottom layer of a Tiger Wrap be completely smooth? I have a few small areas on a long wrap that are not quite perfect.
If it does need to be absolutely smooth, will it diminish the effect to sand the finish and apply another coat prior to wrapping the top layer? Thanks.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the feedback. The issue isn't just the line freezing...we frequently fish in cold weather and we're used to dealing with it. The issue is that the microwave guide itself is freezing. Usually, when guides ice up, it's at the business end of the rod. I've never seen a guide freeze completely closed near the stripper. But I've never seen a guide like the microwave, either. May

I fished Seneca Lake in New York yesterday for perch with a Microwave setup that I built specifically for this fishery. It works as advertised...long casts and line control...and I love the product. However, while it casts great above freezing, when the temperature dipped to 23F yesterday morning I found that the inside ring of the microwave guide actually froze! I've never seen ice form on guide

This is a simple, silly question, but what's the best way to keep a metal ring hook keeper from flopping into the epoxy when turning the rod? I'm building a Batson RX8 5-wt using Snake Brand hardware and the hook keeper is of the type that uses a thin metal strip to hold on a small ring. I've wrapped over the metal strip on both sides to the point where the wraps just start to climb away from the

Hi Mo,
I switched out a spool this evening to 4 lb mono on the Stradic 1000 reel, and it casts very well indeed. Of course, it doesn't cast nearly as well as the Nanofil...that stuff is slick. Prior to finishing the build I compared a size 20 to a 16 and didn't notice any negative impact. I didn't tie in anything smaller though.
Not sure if the KR rod would handle a bigger reel, but this i

I've recently built a few 6' and 6 1/2' finesse rods (MHX 721 and 781) using Fuji KH 16, 10, 5.5 then Minima 4 size 5 runners (x6). I fished them last weekend set up with a Stradic 1000 on one and a Quantum Energy PT 10 on the other, filled with 4lb Nanofil. I really liked the smaller striping guide and they cast flawlessly. I didn't test set up with the 20 KH though, so I can't speak to whether

Thanks for the replies! The butt cap won't be flush with the tubing...maybe I'm being too cautious, but better to ask first than to screw up something that should be easy. Tape sounds like a simple solution. Should'a thought of it myself :(

Hi
This may just reflect my newbie status, but I can't figure out how to shape eva butt caps and trim pieces for a woven graphite grip. I ordered components from Mudhole, both the kit and "extra" pieces, but the trim and butt pieces extend well out from the 0.92" tube (size 16 Aero Comfort reel seat). I'd like to sand the end caps and butt section flush with the tubing. If I bui

Hi Guys,
I've only got a dozen or so rods under my belt, so I'm pretty new to this game...but what a ride!
I'm building a couple steelhead rods for my friends using Batson XST1024 blanks. The stripper and reduction guides are Fuji K-series, and I chose to go with #8 Recoils for the runners to help with icing during the winter on the Lake Ontario tribs. However, the size 8 Recoils sit a bit
