I have had similar problems-I think mine go back to using thread sealer that was too old.

I'll try and bring up the pictures tomorrow--The thread was a ruby red on a St Croix V blank. It is intermittent- I have only had this issue with the Pac Bay thread. No problems with the Pro Wrap

I have had this happen four times- I made a rod using Pac Bay thread. I used Flex coat color preserver after I completed the wraps. When I put on the first coat of Rod Dancer Epoxy black stains appeared at intermittent points on the wrap--I don't understand this--some areas look fine and then some areas are stained. Anyone else have this happen?

I have a couple of rod dryers for my fishing club and i'm thinking about buying a couple more. One is pokey slow and the other dryer turns about 12 rpm I would guess. i was thinking about getting a little faster motor. My assumption is that I will be able to put on my epoxy faster. What speeds to people here prefer?

I ended up belt sanding off the old Brand new Handle--it took about 15-20 to buzz it down close to the Blank- then I just shelled off the remaining cork. To get started I put the handle in a vice held by two pieces of pine. I used the wood as a guide to keep me from burning down too far and hitting the Blank- I took one side down as far as I was comfortable and then I rotated the handle 90 degree

Yes I put three "rings" of masking tape to fit the Reel Seat onto the blank. The tape probably stands out from the blank about 1/8" I put on a liberal amount of epoxy and so I'm sure some was squeegeed off the tape and into the space between the tape rings. The handle did not require too much masking tape- just a little bit at the head otherwise it's only epoxy between the handle

This is going to hurt--I am building a 3 wt. St. Croix Legend Elite. I glued on the maniform handle 180 degrees off from the reel seat- I woke up in the middle of the night thinking "Did I do that?" Checked first thing in the morning and sure enough- Everything setup perfect with one exception. Now my fly reel is going to sit on TOP of the rod- should make for interesting campfire disc

13. Stripping Guides
I've got a few Fly Rods I'll be building this winter. I'm doing a 9 weight Steelhead rod right now- They call for a size 16 Stripping guide and then dropping down to a size 12. I was thinking about doing the same thing for a 4 weight rod I'm going to build. I was thinking that the 16 would let the line in with less friction and then I was going to put a 12 about 4 inches up to continue to funnel

I bored out the Maniform and it turned out OK. I hand reamed it using drill bits until I maxxed out at 1/2". Then I wrapped some sandpaper around a dowel and slowly opened it out. The walls are pretty thin so I took my time andI was able to keep it pretty concrentric. I'm putting this on a SC III 4 weight rod. I'm using H & H single foots so it should be a very light rod.

I like the idea of testing things on a wine cork. I have the handle already. i was thinking about wrapping the area of the handle with string to keep a reinforcement on the outside- hopefully this will keep the cork from shattering out. It seems like the smart thing to do is to go pretty slow with many small bites to get to the end of the job.
What is a Dan Craft cutter?

Thanks for all the responses. I think I'll pick up a stick of the flex tube and try it out

I am going to try and build a Maniform Style Fly Grip but I need to Inlet the reel seat. I was told that you use a Dremel to do this--What type of bits or any suggestions would people have. My main concern is getting too thin on the cork and having it chip off
Thanks

I was having a heck of a time trying to use tape to place some H & H Single Foot wire guides. I got the idea of using hot glue. I put the the foot of the guide right in the hot glue gun tip. I let it sit there for 10 or so seconds and then I pulled it out and pressed it on the blank. I held it there until it was cool--about 10 seconds and then I wiped/rubbed off all of the excess glue and wra

21. Re: Syringes
I went to our local veterinarian and asked them to save their used 3 cc syringes. They kept them in a bag for me and after a month or two I had about 100 o them- i washed them in warm water in the sink and they have worked fine for me.I have not had any problems with Epoxies going weird and the price fit my budget.

24. Size of tip tops
My fishing club students are about ready to start wrapping their guides. I need to order the Tip-tops. If the last guide is a size 8 Fuji- Should I order a size 8 tip top?

I just learned the Forhan wrap and I thought it went pretty smoothly- The trick I learned was to snug up all the wraps at the end before I pulled the thread back with a loop

Thanks everyone- I have glued up the handle and I think I'll have to trim off a little bit of the tip to tune the rod. Appreciate all the help.

George-If I have to choose between the bent tip or the spine- Whichis more important in the handling of the rod?
Roger- If I do cut the tip, should I use a Dremel cutting blade? Any other suggestions?
Thanks

I need some advice- St Croix gives our High School club a really, really, great deal on cosmetic second quality rod blanks- as a general rule they are in outstanding shape. Here is my problem: some of the blanks have the top two to three inches crooked. Should we cut this part off or should we just ignore it? How crooked is crooked? What are the concerns in terms of trimming the blanks shorter?
Forum: rodboard 12 years ago
Dan Murphy
Thanks Everyone- My thought was to try and make a light weight in-expensive handle since these blanks are so short. (The kids quickly scarfed up the 6-7 foot blanks. I will probably make a hybrid slip ring system- Using the rings and then taping them in place.
I very much appreciate the tips, comments, and opinions.
Dan
