Spacing a casting rod guides or spinning?

Probably casting. With a casting rod, the direction the line comes off the spool makes guide placement much more single faceted. Although, the butt guide location is still important.

With a spinning rod, the direction of the line must be changed and redirected so the sizing, height and spacing of the first couple guides is very important if you desire optimum performance.

We have done some articles in RodMaker which I think make both tasks much easier. As the year progresses we will be running some information which Don Morton has been working on which could make guide placement even easier than before.

As you grow in your own rod building experience, you will find that none of this is truly hard to do. Just takes a little time and effort, that's all. It's also a big part of custom rod building.

When you build a rod that you end up really liking, keep a good record of how you built it. Include spacing, guide types, etc. What worked for one length rod will probably work with other rods of that type with a little tweaking.
