Extending a blank

Here is my problem: While fishing, I broke the butt cap and last cork ring of a rod I built. The mistake I made was I extended the cork past the end of the blank, and attached the butt cap to the last 2 rings which were turned down.

I need to fix this rod and add about another 3 inches tothe butt. I have a spare section of solid glass rod blank that fits inside the broken blank. Do I just Rod bond it in there? If so, how long should the piece that goes inside the blank be? I will add about 3 more rings to this extension, but I also need to add another 1 or 2 to the blank. There is a lip where the blanks meet, should I build this up and make a smooth transition from the blank to the extension?

Thank you, Billy

Hi Billy,
Should be no problem extending the few inches. Instead of solid glass you might want to just use the tubular graphite and fit it inside up to about 6 inches. If I learned my lesson correctly from Ralph, it is best to use a lower modulus material to bond with the existing material you need to repair. In the heavy butt end where there is no flex it is less relevant, although the solid glass also will add extra weight you may not want.

Rod Bond should work well, or 2 part slower cure paste expoxy (2 hr.?). This is a fairly common fix or 'extension' to a blank that will hold up well bonded in this fashion. Probably no need to 'build up' the transition as the thick past epoxy will fill it in.

Hope this helps.
