Someone has requested that I build for them a rod with single-foot guides. I've never used these before, but I've gathered from some of the posts on this board that the sizing system for single-foots differs from that for snake guides. If this is true, I would love for someone to explain it to me--or provide me a link where I might find a conversion chart or something of the like.

I'm not sure there is a conversion chart. The general rule of thumb is to use the smallest guides that will still pass the line and and connections you need to pass. Generally, size 6 is the smallest single foot ceramic and the number corresponds to the ring size. In the wire type single foot guides, a number 6 would be the largest of that type and would equate closer to a #6 snake guide in terms of opening, and maybe to about a #10 single foot ceramic.

So for snake to single foot wire type single foot, you can consider them about the same per number designation. For conversion to ceramic single foots, figure a #2 snake about the same as a #6 or #7 ring.

Does this mean that if a company is offering sizes 2-6 in wire frame single foots, they offer nothing that compares to a 1/0 or 1 snake guide? And if the answer is yes, does that mean someone customarily only builds larger-weight rods with single foots? (The rod I'll be building is a 4 wt.)
