Skeleton Seats???

hello All,
I just wanted to know a little about skeleton seats. I have seen them on the St. Croix Avid series using cork instead of a wood insert. How dificult is it to mount a skeleton. What if any special techniques should I follow if I try it. I really like the look of the cork . I have yet to use a skeleton seat and I am building a special rod for a friend and I want it to look different.

It's not problem to mount a skeleton seat and most times you are mounting them on the insert which is then mounted to the blank. The only thing to be careful of is getting the hoods properly aligned with each other when you mount them to the insert.

How far under the rings and thread should the insert fit and why? If I had a nice short piece of wood I wanted to use that wasn't long enough to fit under the hardware, couldn't I just put a bushing to support the hardware? I always wondered why the long shoulder on inserts.

Yes, you could do that. It would require fitting more individual pieces, but there is nothing wrong with that.
