trim wraps in the middle of main wrap

Hey everyone hope 2002 is good for all

Im starting a new rod, I finally chose my components and colors.

Im planning on doing a trim band in the middle of the main wraps 5 or 6 turn very fine thread.

my question is do you stop and tie off the main wrap, then tie the trim band then start main wrap again and finish, or do you wrap trim over the main thread without cutting and then continue on after trim band s are wound ?

many thanks Happy wrapping "John"

It will be smoother and look much nicer if you start and stop the main wrap, make the trim, then start the main wrap again.

Here's how I do it.

Mark off the position where the trim band is going to be. When your underwrap gets close (6 wraps) to the mark, slip one edge of the trim band thread under the underwrap. Keep wrapping over the trim band until you get to where the trim band will begin.

Cross the trim thread over the undwrap last thread. This will lock it into place (a photo would explain this better). When the trim is complete, take the underwrap thread and wrap it over the trim thread. After a few wraps you can cut the end of the trim thread and it will be completly covered by the overwrapping thread.

I hope this was clear enough.

Greg's method is what I use for 1-3 wrap trims, but when you start adding more you will notice a lump of the primary wrap underneath. I would consider Tom's method if you are going with 5 turns and definately Tom's method if the primary wrap is dark the the trim a non-NCP or metallic. (otherwise, when you apply finish or CP you might get the dark showing).
i don't typically do trims with more than 3 turns, so again the way Greg does it, is how I do to.
