No Finish rod blanks

I just found a discounted fly rod blank that I am very interested in but it is labeled as having a color of NF. Does a non finished blank need to be finished with something? Is finishing an entire blank a difficult proposition? Do you finish the blank BEFORE installing components? I don't really want it painted a color. What I would really like is a Matte black/charcoal finish. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

No, a finish is not required but it can be finished if you so desire. It's not particularly hard to do and this board's archives are full of info on how to do the job in various ways.

If you choose to refinish it, do so before you add you components and make sure you have given the finish ample time to dry/cure.

I have two CD blanks ready to build without any finish on them. The manufacturer told me they don't need some finish. They actually finish the blank with bee's wax which helps to seal them.
A non-finish rod will decrease the weight of your blank (by 7% for a loomis GLX) and increase the performance/flexion of your rod.
