I have a friend who is retiring to Port Townsend, WA and I would like to build him a custom rod for the area. I am assuming that he will fish both the local rivers and the coastal area for Salmon/Steelhead. I was thinkin of a spiral wrap 8' 6" medium/heavy action bait casting rod that can be used for both mooching as well as bouncing roe and casting spoons/spinners. Since I dont know the local techniques and tools for fishing in Port Townsend I thought I would post here. Any familiar with this area have recommendations for a good all around rod??

I would recomend a Rainshadow rod blank for this rod. You also might want to consider going for a little bit longer rod this leaves your friend with the option of using it for float fishing if he decides to use that technique. Somthing in the range of 9 to 9'6". Good luck

I agree with John. Rainshadow is just up the highway, he can go see where it was built. I started with 8'6" , now using a 9'6" far more often and looking to build a 10' and maybe even a 10'6". Just gives you a lot more options on the river.

A comapny in oregon called Rogue Rods makes a nice salmon rod. I would assume that they make the rods to match local tecniques. They are also very strong. Janns Net Craft sells some, but not all of them.

The IST 1025F would make a great rod for what you want to do, especially if he starts targeting the big natives out on the peninsula.
