Wrap from above or below

Does anyone see a distinct advantage in one style or the other, i.e. wrapping with thread above the blank or coming from below? I am just gwtting used to my new Master Track Wrapper and as of yet see no advantage to wrapping from above. Also tough to learn a new trick I guess, but just looking for more input. Thanks!

Sean

I learned how to wrap by myself, trial and error. I learned to wrap with the thread coming from underneath. I went to purchase a Rod Lathe and found all of them except the Custom power wrapper from Angler's Workshop require wrapping with thread from above. I was very against this and did not want to switch. Made the purchase and after I had wrapped a couple of rods, couldn't remember why I thought underneath was better. It is strictly a matter of personal preference, now that I wrap with thread from above, can't imagine switching back. My suggestion, do what makes sense to you and seems easier, but if you ever think you will purchase a power wrapper, might as well learn to wrap from above now, before you become ingrained doing it the other way.

Sean,

I am still new at rodbuilding, but I have done it both ways, and have settled with wrapping from above.

I find that it gives me better control, and it's easier to get perfect wraps if I can watch the thread as it goes on. If there is any gap or overlay, I can correct it instantly, rather than having to back up, as when wrapping from beneath.

Hope this helps.

I've done it both ways and like wrapping from above. I think that after you have done a few rods you will agree that its more comfortable and you have a little more control over thr thread. I've found that it is easier to place by tie off loop from the top. Incerting a single threat trim is easier and as stated above you can see the thread as it goes onto the blank and make necessary corrections.
