Fly in the handle

I have just perfected a technique I have been working on for some time. Embedding a fly in the cork handle of a fly rod. It came out neat on two that I just completed for customers. After experimenting on scrap cork and gouging them out to see if they would eventually come loose I'm convinced that will stay there. It's an exacting process and takes a little time to do properly. If anyone is interested I can relay what I have learned. One thing I learned is to use a small,j bright fly. A vital accessory is a Dremel Tool with the proper boring bit to make the properly shaped hole in the cork. I'm now working on some sort of small fish figure or similar article to put in a spinning or casting handle. I am looking for some small charm type articles that should work well.

I have seen this done by various rod builders over the years and it is just one more way to add a custom touch to a rod. In fact, given the distaste of many fly fishermen for any sort of decorative wrap, this sort of thing is a worthwhile option to consider instead.

Capt. Harold,
I'm very interested in your findings. I've unsuccessfuly experimented a little with inlays but it sounds like you've got this one down. Love to see pictures. Please teach me your technique. Thanks.
