Any tips on how to keep my light colored thread light on a black blank? I've thought about doing a prewrap in white, then doing my underwrap over that to see if it keep the color truer. Anybody tried this or have any other suggestions? Thanks

You have several options here.

1. Use NCP. It will darken some, but not nearly as much as non-protected regular nylon.

2. Use a color preserver. Some color preservers give almost perfect color retention on dark backgrounds, others less so.

3. Paint the blank a lighter color (white) under the area you plan to wrap.

4. Make an underwrap of NCP white in the smallest size thread possible.

You are up against one of the biggest dilemas faced by most decorative thread artists. Careful choices in thread, background and wrap sequence are necessary to give you what you want.

which cp do you prefer? I'm using the flex coat brand now and it darkens my thread quit a bit. My yellows end up green, etc. If you used the paint, what kind will work?

I used CPX when I could get it. Then the SC215 from Epoxy Coatings Company (still my favorite) and lately Gudebrod 811. All are similar.

Any enamel paint, and I'd go for flat white, can be used as an undercoat for the wrap. It will not be harmed by epoxy rod finish.

Tom, instead of enamel paint, can a white nail polish be used instead? I'd like to try this on a piece of scrap blank but before I run to buy some nail polish I thought I'd seek your opinion first.

Don't mean to step on any toes and answer for anyone, but it you're going out to buy something why not just get the paint? I think nail polish is a laquer base and might harm the paint already on the blank.
