Thanks and varnish question

First, thanks to all who so generously give of their time and knowledge here. I am new to this and have learned more off of this board than any other source. It is a pleasure to associate with such a fine group.

OK... We've settled on a CP, applied it per our orders, and are ready to apply multiple thibn coats of our chosed finish. Up to now, it had been Permagloss. I am struggling with the concept of low build after having heaped Flex Coat on nylon / graphite for a couple of years. On my first cane project, somehow I dont think four coats of PG is enough. Next problem is that it just doesn't stay level, no matter what I do... Is there a finish that is a better self-leveler than others?

They all level perfectly - pour some out onto a flat table or something and watch what happens - they level! What you need is something that flows well, and most do, but the time that they will do that varies.

Permagloss has a different look than epoxy. But it flows well, just not for very long. Ralph O'Quinn told me that he has had good results with it by pouring some in a cup, letting it sit for just a few mintues to slightly thicken, and then applying it a bit thicker and rotating the rod for several minutes until it sets. Worth a try I suppose.

Keep in mind as well that you can use any type or viscosity epoxy in a thin application rather than a high build one. Put on less and brush off any that you don't want on there.

And there are also the guys who swear by Varithane on bamboo rods.

If I was you, I'd make some test wraps and try some things. Better that way than to use your rod as the test bed.

Dont use Perma gloss on cane... Use Spar Varnish 2-4 coats full strength on wraps then dip rod 2-4 times.. Also if your useing Perma Gloss and it is not leveling then you put to much on there, you dont glob it on like Flex Coat....Thin Coats is the best.. Thanks Dave

Permagloss works just fine on cane. Looks much like varnish but will last longer and stay clearer. Great for wraps on cane rods.

The differing opinions are based on personal experience I supose but frustrating none the less. Beleive me Dave, I am not "globbing" the PG on the wraps either - dip the brush, wipe off the excess, and paint once - but your advice of reading a book on finishing is well understood. Thanks again for your input, its just too easy to rely on the wisdom of those that are the real pros. I dont want my first cane rod to look like my first cane rod.
