I ma building a 4 wt Winston and I changed out the guides to titanium gold cermet (only thing is I have never used anything other than snake guides). Can I use the same spacing and number of guildes I would if using snake guides? I know they're light, but the top guides have to be slightly heavier than snake guides. Re: titanium single foot guides

No they are not heavier especially when you consider that they only require half the wrap and finish. You could use the same spacing if you wish. Re: titanium single foot guides

Same spacing as what? In my opinion Winston uses too many guides to use Winston's spacing with single foots. The titanium/cerment top is lighter than the steel top, so even if the top couple of guides are slightly heavier than the snakes it will come out okay. I try for 1 guide per foot of length or maybe plus 1 for single foots. I built a LT 4 wt with titanium SIC guides and I love it. I compared mine with a factory rod and they "feel" the same. Mine handles line better. Re: titanium single foot guides

Spacing is one of the most important aspects of rodbuilding, don't ever take the factory settings at face value. Winston probably does a good job, but guide spacing will depend on YOUR testing by cast and stress. Certainly use there factory placement as a guide, but "fiddle" with it till you get exactly what you want. I agree with the statement that usually one guide per foot, plus one. This doesn't include the tip. So example: if 9ft rod start with 10guides plus a tip, but always go off testing. I have seen some 9 ft rods with up to 12 guides plus tip.
