Can anyone shed some light on to how the length of a rear grip changes things on a 15kg standup style game rod.Is it purely a size thing for the person who the rod is for? Or are there other factors at play.Have buit my rod drier and now looking at getting the components for my first build.Reel will be Tld 25.Cheers. Re: rear grip 15kg standup rod.

Hello Scott.
A standup rod, to me, is as custom as it gets, you need to know the major prey, the type of baits, the strategy or method of fishing, then you can maybe pick a blank, once you choose a blank and all the harnesses you plan on using you can start to fit the rod to the customer and what ever harnesses they may or may not use. The length of the rear grip will be determined by how the fisher holds the rod while reeling and pumping the rod. Once I pick the blank I put the gimbal on temporarily, get a seat that I can tape onto the blank temporarily and get THE REEL they will use, harness them up and try to set the seat. I build the grips around what I find about the seat. The fore grip has its own eccentrics. The process is long and drawn-out suffice it to say I cant put it all down here it would take pages. I don't know if this is helpful but good luck. By the way Tom did a write-up on stand-up rods called "A Guide For Building Stand-Up Rods" back in July-August 2002, Vol-5 / Issue-6 / Pg.-22, and he re-released it May-June 2018 Vol-21 / Issue-3 / Pg.-22 with the name "Complete Guide To Building Stand-Up Rods". He set it up a little different but I Think the articles are the same, if not let me know. Tight Wraps & Tighter Lines. Bob, New Bern, NC. Re: rear grip 15kg standup rod.

Hi Robert,
I will try to get a copy of that magazine article.I have 3 factory buit rods that I have used for years and they have between 8 and 10 inch rear grips.I will put on harness and have a real good look at which seems better fit.Funny how you can use something for a long time and never put much thought in to it.Was looking at the ALPS durra butt (nylon slick I Think) and they come in 3 lengths.8,10 & 113/4 Inch long matched to a 27mm gimbal butt.Rod will be for inshore sharking so no casting ir holding rod for long periods.Looking at maybe a Calstar 655 or 6455 blank. Thanks for your advice. The article in the recent Rodmaker Magazine is excellent! Agree with Robert, fit and feel is important. Re: rear grip 15kg standup rod.

The original article on stand-up rods found in the volume 5 #6 issue of RodMaker is beyond anything written, anywhere, about the subject. I still have a handful of those in back issue form. Not just trying to sell you something - it is really helpful.
The new issue has a reprint with a bit of an update, but essentially they are the same. ............ Re: rear grip 15kg standup rod.

The Special Edition Task Specific Rod Building CD also has the information, and a bunch of other specific style rods. Re: rear grip 15kg standup rod.
