Ok, I had three spinning rods I didn't use much because of the old style huge guide sets. (Replacement guide sets with tip-tops purchased at Utmost weigh less than each original stripper guide) Carefully, I scraped them down. I did go over them with 400 grit for smoothing. Since they were <$30 each when purchased I decided to try an experiment with Rustoleum Ultra High Heat enamel. The paint was fairly thin and I applied with gloves and a saturated blue shop towel. The result is a smooth satin finish. After three days of curing I tried removing paint with a wood popsicle stick. No luck, was just making shiny spots. just wondered if I should apply a coating of permagloss or something else or just leave them alone. Chemical ingredients are; Hydrotreated Light Distillate <25%, Mineral Spirits <20%, Talc (Hydrous Magnesium Silicate) <10%, Copper Chromite Black Spinel <5%, Ethylbenzene <1%, Methyl Ethyl Ketoxime <1%. Any constructive comments welcome.

Leave them alone. PermaGloss will likely eat the paint and epoxy is not really intended as a top coating for blanks. You can carry these things too far - paint to protect the blank, PG to protect the paint, something else to protect the PG, and something else to protect that, etc., etc. Unless you're working with very heavy power rods, before you know it you'd added enough additional weight to really degrade the blank's performance.

If it does not scape off you could just leave it alone. I have not used the Ultra high heat paint before so I have not idea how it would clear coat with PG. You can try to clear coat a small area where the handle will go, or use a piece of a broken rod for testing. PG does give a very hard and durable finish. If you try it let us know how works.

Ok you got the paint on and it is fully cured and you want to put a shine to it if I understand you correctly and don't want to destroy the paint with any solvent based sealer /finish so here is what I use to skin that cat I use the threadmaster one finish it is a water based urethane and works like PG and is a tough hard finish with out the harsh chemicals and won't eat the paint best part is it works the same as PG wet out your sponge or what ever you choose to use for application and have at it it does dry to touch quickly working time is short but the results are great

If you are happy with the color and finish, I suggest you just apply a coat of paste wax and lightly buff it.

Thanks for all your comments. A local rod builder offered me some threadmaster, But I think it's 2-part for guide wraps. Will find out.
