As the title states I am building the NFC Flip above using a Spiral wrap. A lot of my research suggests 9 or more guides including tip. NFC's site offers guide placement recommendations for a spiral wrap using only 8 guides including tip for this specific blank. I followed NFC's guidelines and performed a static test and all looks good. Zero blank contact. Because I will be using heavy lines I opted for a guide train of 20,10, 5.5, and on out with 4.5s. I was able to make the 180deg. transition using 3 guides. I assume my static test shows less is more and 8 guides are fine? Just looking for confirmation I guess?

No need for the 20, do what your doing with a 10 to start, and add another 4.5 where a 5.5mm guide was. Myself and others have started with a smaller first guide than you have with no problems.

Start with a FJ RV6, FJ KB5, 4-FJ KB4.5s and 3-FJ KB4.5s. I would do at least 9 total guides and maybe even 10 or 11 depending on your reel seat placement. Like Spencer said; No need for the 20. You can get the height you need with the RV.

Don't know how heavy the line you have in mind is but your thinking is correct in choosing a little bit larger stripper if heavier than typical lines are going to be used.

Drop the 20, and start with either a KW10 or RV 6. Followed by the 5.5 transition and 4.5 runners. Since you are doing a spiral you do not need a bunch of runners, if your static test gives you 8 or 9 total guides that fine. Just do some test flipping with it and see how it performs.

Never be afraid to experiment by testing the opinions and recommendations of others to dertermine unambiguously what works best for you. You will never know what works the best for you unless you actually test them.

It is a good thing to try new and different things. Sometimes the new idea will be a bad idea, but even with that event, you have learned knowledge to continue onward. Also, keeping a notebook on ideas - both good and bad is a good idea.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. For me, the order of importance is function, weight, aesthetics, then value. I mainly build for myself. This said, i think replacing the bulky 20 stripper with the kw10 or rv6 would save weight and look nicer. But will it function as well? I will order the parts and see for myself. To me the height of the stripper is more important, If you can achieve that height with a smaller ring on a bass flipping rod then you have achieved that goal. The static test is great but it also needs to cast. The configuration I suggested is used by guys that are using 50# and 60# braid without issue. You also may consider locking wraps on the smaller guides especially near the tip. These are all just suggestions, don't let it confuse you if you already have a plan. There is more than one way to skin a mule but I am not sure why you would skin the mule in the first place.

I wound up using a set of airwave guides on my spiral wrap rod as they stood up taller as i was having troubles with the line rubbing on the rod when loaded. They may not be the prettiest guides but they function, the set i used was the AW-set-c and they where cheap...lol...good luck..
