I am building a 9ft 4pc 11wt rod. on the tip section the spacing is a follows. 4", 8 5/8, 14", 20" and 26 7/8. the last guide lands right next where the ferrule wrap will end. and I mean right next to it. Do I do it all one wrap or do I leave a very very small gap? What do you do if a guide lands mid way through a ferrule? Thanks for all your help!! You did not indicate if you've completed the static load test to confirm guide locations. Nonetheless, the way I do it is:
First, make the ferrule wraps (this to protect the blank during the static load test); Tape the guides in place using the manufacturer's suggestion or your best guess; Complete the static load test and determine the final guide locations. If a guide is on or adjoins a ferrule wrap, the problem is really an aesthetic issue. Do whatever looks best to you - a single wrap or a ferrule and guide wrap with a space between. If you're placing trim bands outside the ferrule wraps just incorporate them where they belong even if that is on the foot of a guide. Obviously a guide cannot be literally "mid way through a ferrule" with one foot on one section and the other on the adjoining section of the blank. If by "mid way" you mean a guide's optimum location coincides with a ferrule wrap it is no harm & no foul to make a single, combined ferrule and guide foot wrap - it happens. Personally - I don't like the way an integrated ferrule and guide wrap looks.
I always separate them. Herb Re: Tough fly rod placement question
