Old Fly Rod Question

A buddy inherited an old Cortland fly rod, 8', 2 piece, single tip, labeled as a 6 - 7 weight. Suspect it is a glass rod. Rod has metal ferrules, under wraps for ALL guides, is very attractive, and appears to have never been fished.

Before I help my buddy leave the Dark Side of bait casting and join the ranks of enlightened fly fishermen, thought it would be a good idea to first determine if his rod is just another old fly rod or might have collector value.

My request is where ought I look obtain a valuation before I do something maybe stupid and let him fish it?

It has no monetary value to speak of.

$ 70 for a really good one, most of the metal ferruled ones are the earlier FR-2000 rods. Soft by todays glass rod standards, even softer than the old FenGlass fly rods. You'll probably be happier with a 5 wt line on it.

Donald

It may be fun for your friend to try it, it will be a good experience to see how development of materials has advanced over the years. Comparing early glass rods with today's composites should be a real eye opener.

I think displaying the rod and offer show and tell sessions will give your friend a lot more satisfaction.

Good fishing

John

The very first fly rod I ever owned was a Cortland 8’ 6-7 wgt., which was paired with a Pflueger Medalist reel. Because it was my first fly rod it was quite special and I still have very fond memories of that rod and the fish I caught with it. Things have really changed over the years, but that rod was a lot of fun to fish.
