More handle questions.

I received the stuff, eva, to build my handle on a power hump rod I dredged up from the lake. I like the power hump reel seat so I kept it. I drilled the handle offset and cut the bevel on the piece of eva but don't know how to shape it. I chucked up a round sanding disk in my drill press and carved a bit but it didn't seem like the thing to do. i have to reduce the rear of the grip about 1/4" and carve the power hump to it's final shape. I have another power hump handle for a pattern. Should I glue the handle on the rod first or shape the handle first? What can I use to cut a bunch off the eva? Thanks.

Alex

I do not recommend gluing the handle to the blank before shaping, because f it does not turn out right you are faced with the difficult task of removing it and starting over.

I would mount the handle on a mandrel so it would be easier to grip and maneuver. To shape the handle try using a Dremmel with a medium sanding drum.

Gently work the Dremmel using quick light passes. Since little material is removed each pass it may take a little extra time and patience to get it to the shape you want. Final finish with light sanding with fine abrasive by hand.

A narrow belt sander may work also but whatever method you choose you must use light passes to avoid over heating the material.

Good luck

John

Gotter done. I used the sanding drum on the drill press for most of the shaping and hand sanded for the finish. I bought a surform sander and tried a dremel with a sanding drum but the drill press drum was much better and didn't remove too much material. It only took me a week. If I had to do it over I'd cut the Power Hump reel seat off and use a straight grip but hindsight is 20-20. There is a picture in the pictures place; I still don't know how to post it in this text. I still have to put Flex Coat on the guides and butt.
