Back several years ago when rodbuilding was taught to me, I built my 1st rod with a homemade foamcore rear grip. Once we shaped the grip, we coated it with epoxy and we mixed paint into the epoxy to make it black. Another time I repaired a broken spinning rod for myself and instead of painting the out sleeve to match the silver blank and putting epoxy over it, , I mixed paint into the epoxy and covered the sleeve that way to match. Both times I used Testors model paint. Is there anybody that uses this method for color? And if so, is there a preferred paint / epoxy mix that works best? I have used several different brands of epoxy over the years and I don't know what brand I was using at the times mentioned above.

Several times I have painted sections of a rod blank and covered it with epoxy. Some of the color has faded over the years, I wonder if the paint / epoxy mix would hold up better?

Their are regular pigments available now, Some still use Testors, Do a search for {Marbling} [www.mudhole.com]

The key in using pigments such as Testor's enamel, is to try and use only the pigment rather than the solvent. So don't shake or stir the bottle. Pour off the solvent or at least get the thicker stuff from the bottom of the bottle.

I just built a rod and used some black CRB marbling pigment in Threadmaster Lite epoxy and it worked fine.
