Restoring Bamboo Fly Rod
Posted by: Dick Bade (---.lightspeed.emhril.sbcglobal.net)

I have been building custom spinning and bait casting rods for about 20 years. I inherited 3 spilt bamboo fly rods a number of years ago and would like to restore them. I have no experience working with bamboo or restoring a bamboo fly rod. It appears from my research that there are many methods that can be used to complete a project like this. Looking for suggestions regarding restoring the finish, tying on new guides, etc. Thanks, Dick

Do some online searching. There are numerous sites and videos on the restoration subject. Caution, before you start, be sure you find out what you have in hand. There some very valuable old bamboo fly rods that should not be restored.

Buy a copy of Michael Sinclair's "The Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook". Lots of historical data, tips and techniques, etc. It's well worth the price.

The three rods I have are a Heddon #10 - 8-1/2', Shakespear A1362 - 8-1/2' and Southbend #50 - 9'. I don't think any of these qualify as "very valuable". Not sure though.

Dick, bamboo restoration is a lot of what I do. Been doing it for almost 30 years. The order you have them listed is probably your order of value.
The Sinclair book is a good reference.
I would be happy to help walk you through the process. I probably even have parts if you need them.
Message me if you want and we can chat..
